About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
When Englishman Chris Broad landed in a rural village in northern Japan he wondered if he'd made a huge mistake. With no knowledge of the language and zero teaching experience, was he was about to be the most quickly fired English teacher in Japan's history?
Abroad in Japan charts a decade of living in a foreign land and the chaos and culture clash that comes with it. Packed with hilarious and fascinating stories, this book seeks out to unravel one the world's most mysterious and impenetrable cultures.
Spanning 10 years and 47 prefectures, Chris takes us from the chilling summit of Mount Fuji to the chaotic neon-lit streets of Tokyo. With blockbuster moments such as a terrifying North Korean missile incident, a Japanese national TV experience gone horribly wrong and a week spent with Japan's biggest movie star, Ken Watanabe, Abroad in Japan is an extraordinary and informative journey through the Land of the Rising Sun.

Story
What is Western Civilization? According to Professor Noble, it is "much more than human and political geography," encompassing myriad forms of political and institutional structures - from monarchies to participatory republics - and its own traditions of political discourse. It involves choices about who gets to participate in any given society and the ways in which societies have resolved the tension between individual self-interest and the common good.

Story
It’s 2008, and it’s been a while since Jake Adelstein was the only gaijin crime reporter for the Yomiuri Shimbun. The global economy is in shambles, Jake is off the police beat but still chain-smoking clove cigarettes, and Tadamasa Goto, the most powerful boss in the Japanese organized crime world, has been banished from the yakuza, giving Adelstein one less enemy to worry about—for the time being. But as he puts his life back together, he discovers that he may be no match for his greatest enemy—himself.

Story
Nine out of ten Japanese claim some affiliation with Shinto, but in the West the religion remains the least studied of the major Asian spiritual traditions. It is so interlaced with Japanese cultural values and practices that scholarly studies usually focus on only one of its dimensions: Shinto as a "nature religion", an "imperial state religion", a "primal religion", or a "folk amalgam of practices and beliefs". Thomas Kasulis' fresh approach to Shinto explains with clarity and economy how these different aspects interrelate.

Story
The automobile was one of the most miraculous inventions of the 20th century. It promised freedom, style, and utility. But sometimes, rather than improving our lives technology just makes everything worse. Over the past century cars have filled the air with toxic pollutants and fueled climate change. Cars have stolen public space and made our cities uglier, dirtier, less useful, and more unequal. Cars have caused tens of millions of deaths and injuries. They have wasted our time and our money.

Across seven tales, Haruki Murakami brings his powers of observation to bear on the lives of men who, in their own ways, find themselves alone. Here are lovesick doctors, students, ex-boyfriends, actors, bartenders, and even Kafka’s Gregor Samsa, brought together to tell stories that speak to us all. In Men Without Women, Murakami has crafted another contemporary classic, marked by the same wry humor and pathos that have defined his entire body of work.

Dive into Chris Broads back story
Although many moments have been touched on by the author in either his YouTube channel or Podcast. Abroad in Japan is a worthwhile listen to get a sense of the wonderment that the author feels in his journey. The book felt like listening to an old friend recounting their memories with you from long ago. Well written with slightly less of Broad's trademark snarky commentary it's a listen you won't regret. Filled with moments that you can tell really touched and helped to shape the man into the YouTuber many of us know today.

Never been to Japan, maybe one day. Have been following Chris' Youtube channel for a few years now, and always enjoyed watching and appreciated the quality of his content grow over time. Now I'm even more pleasantly surprised at Chris' top-notch narration skills. I enjoyed the whole book in two sittings, and the way the stories are narrated, it's like... you're there.
Great Job. Thank you for sharing your adventures !

A Broad in Japan
Chris Broad defines the life of a youth looking for more, of a YouTuber, of a strange, of a life anew. His retelling of events from humble beginnings teaching and learning to Covering some of the larger events that take place in Japan underscore a life well experienced. His relatable quarrel with personal uncertainty, challenges with the unfamiliar, and culture shock help detail the realization that Chris isn't simply having fun riding a wave but rather navigating a life of new experiences. In a sense, Chris is born-anew.
Chris details a life of adventure. Not a listen to miss. Especially if you youtuber.
