Publisher's Summary

This program includes three bonus interviews with the author.

The world's leading expert on near-death experiences reveals his journey toward rethinking the nature of death, life, and the continuity of consciousness.

Cases of remarkable experiences on the threshold of death have been reported since ancient times, and are described today by 10% of people whose hearts stop. The medical world has generally ignored these “near-death experiences”, dismissing them as “tricks of the brain” or wishful thinking. But after his patients started describing events that he could not just sweep under the rug, Dr. Bruce Greyson began to investigate.

As a physician without a religious belief system, he approached near-death experiences from a scientific perspective. In After, he shares the transformative lessons he has learned over four decades of research. Our culture has tended to view dying as the end of our consciousness, the end of our existence - a dreaded prospect that for many people evokes fear and anxiety.

But Dr. Greyson shows how scientific revelations about the dying process can support an alternative theory. Dying could be the threshold between one form of consciousness and another, not an ending but a transition. This new perspective on the nature of death can transform the fear of dying that pervades our culture into a healthy view of it as one more milestone in the course of our lives. After challenges us to open our minds to these experiences and to what they can teach us, and in so doing, expand our understanding of consciousness and of what it means to be human.

NDEs

I’ve been reading a lot of these books lately having been recently diagnosed with a terminal illness. I am a sceptic at heart and it’s books like Dr. Greyson’s that help me to believe there is some kind of spiritual realm after all. This book has given me more comfort than all the counselling and pharmaceuticals I’ve been offered. Thank you

First audio book I was able to complete since my sons death six months ago

My title says it all. I suddenly and tragically lost my only child and son six months ago. Shortly thereafter I attempted to immerse myself with books about grief and loss. When you lose a child you’re desperate to understand, to make sense of things, to find answers. While each book provided snippets of relatable experiences. Aside from “Bearing The Unbearable” none related enough to keep my interest. Breathing, let alone reading, is an extremely difficult task when you’re a raw bereaved parent. Life After Life would be my second completed read. Both books brought me comfort in a way nothing else could. It was an escape from the 24/7 pain and suffering. When I completed Life After Life Kindle recommended “After” to me. At this time I was in a phase where I would get in my car and drive aimlessly for hours. I downloaded the sample and was instantly hooked. Every day I would listen to 30-40 minutes while driving. The further I got into the book the more I wanted to preserve it, so I forced myself to only listen every 2-3 days. It was that good. Books such as After you never want to end. Especially when they’ve become part of healing process. I’m very sad it’s over but thankful for it being part of my journey and providing me with the immense comfort that it did.

To any potential readers, this is a must read. Regardless of denomination. Prior to my sons death I was a stanch atheist. I still remain a skeptic because my life long beliefs will take years of unlearning but in my heart and soul I know with certainty there’s more. I just need to get my mind there. Slowly but steadily it’s happening.

Thank you for all your exceptional life long work in this space Dr. Greyson. My heart, body, mind and consciousness:) thank you.

A thought provoking read

This is a beautiful blend of the science, mysticism and the unknown. It left me wanting to ask patients more questions about their experiences. It shines light on what divides us and the non-physical.

Brilliant presentation of a fascinating subject!

This comprehensive and masterfully delivered book/audiobook sheds brilliant light on the fascinating subject of NDEs. Dr Greyson presents his material objectively but also in a delightfully palatable manner, and with great clarity. I believe this book will stand out in this incredible, burgeoning field that is daily moving closer and closer to mainstream thinking. And that is GOOD!

A skeptic appreciates the framework of the author’s writing

I am a skeptic, and yet found this book was refreshingly written without an underlying taint of moral or driving of self-serving premiss. If you are a skeptic, challenge yourself to read this one. It might change your outlook on a thing or two. It did for me.

Fantastic Book on the subject

I really liked the scientific approach to this genre as many dismiss NDEs as fanciful hallucinations when rhe brain ia starved of oxygen. This book looks at the science and the stories. Great book
