About this listen
From New York Times best-selling author Clare Mackintosh comes a deeply moving and addictive novel about an impossible choice - and the two paths fate could take.
“A beautifully written novel, compelling and clever, tender and true. I can’t stop thinking about it.” (Liane Moriarty, best-selling author of Big Little Lies)
“Tailor-made for book clubs and for fans of Jodi Picoult.” (Publishers Weekly)
Max and Pip are the strongest couple you know. They're best friends, lovers - unshakable. But then their son gets sick and the doctors put the question of his survival into their hands. For the first time, Max and Pip can't agree. They each want a different future for their son.
What if they could have both?
A gripping and propulsive exploration of love, marriage, parenthood, and the road not taken, After the End brings one unforgettable family from unimaginable loss to a surprising, satisfying, and redemptive ending and the life they are fated to find. With the emotional power of Jodi Picoult's My Sister's Keeper, Mackintosh helps us to see that sometimes the end is just another beginning.

Story
The discovery of a dead infant in an Amish barn shakes Lancaster County to its core. But the police investigation leads to a more shocking disclosure: Circumstantial evidence suggests that 18-year-old Katie Fisher, an unmarried Amish woman believed to be the newborn's mother, took the child's life. When Ellie Hathaway, a disillusioned big-city attorney, comes to Paradise, Pennsylvania, to defend Katie, two cultures collide - and for the first time in her high-profile career, Ellie faces a system of justice very different from her own.

Rationalizing it as a need to protect Norah, his wife, he makes a split-second decision that will alter all of their lives forever. Born in a bathtub in 1954 to a white mother and a Cherokee father, Betty Carpenter is the sixth of eight siblings. The world they inhabit in the rural town of Breathed, Ohio, is one of poverty and violence—both from outside the family and, devastatingly, from within. What the critics say
"Medical ethics and familial bonds are tested in Clare Mackintosh’s After the End.... Expertly told...[with] a ray of hope at the end." (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)
“Clare Mackintosh’s complex, riveting page-turner grapples with hard questions without ever straying from its emotional true north. I fell in love with the compelling voices of Pip, Max, and Leila as they explored the bravest and most terrifying words in the English language: What if. After the End is gorgeous, heart-wrenching, hope-soaked, and honest. It made me feel a thousand things, and it also made me think. Get an extra copy for a friend; you’re going to need to talk about this one.” (Joshilyn Jackson, New York Times best-selling author of Never Have I Ever)
"Clare Mackintosh’s After the End is absolutely compulsive reading, a heart-pounding family story with a child’s life in the balance. So skilled is this author, that, just when the reader thinks there is no possible resolution, another door opens. You may think you’ve experienced medical drama before, but you haven’t, not this way.” (Jacquelyn Mitchard, New York Times best-selling author of The Deep End of the Ocean)

An Impossible Decision To Make
As hard as it was to get through this book without tears it was completely worth every second. I'm very sorry that this book was very close to home for Clare Mackintosh but it's the reason it was completely well written and loved.

Absolutely recommend
This book is magnificent for many reasons. The author was clearly writing from her heart because truth rang throughout the story. The characters’ lives, perspectives, and feelings were masterfully interwoven and separated. This story is a masterpiece! The narrators were all excellent and their voices served to bring the characters to life.

Not your typical Mackintosh but just as good!
Wow, what a story! I loved the points of view, the portrayal is some things that just don’t matter and Mackintosh’s ability to make everyone feel what her characters feel. I am in love with This remarkable family. I cannot wait for her next book
