About this listen

Reviews prior to 1/2/25 relate to a previous recording with the same narrator.

One of fantasy’s finest next-generation storytellers continues to break new ground.

Michael J. Sullivan’s trailblazing career began with the breakout success of his Riyria series: full-bodied, spellbinding fantasy adventures whose imaginative scope and sympathetic characters won a devoted readership and comparisons to fantasy masters Brandon Sanderson, Scott Lynch, and J.R.R. Tolkien himself. Now Age of Myth inaugurates an original five-book series.

Since time immemorial, humans have worshipped the gods they call Fhrey, truly a race apart: invincible in battle, masters of magic, and seemingly immortal. But when a god falls to a human blade, the balance of power between humans and those they thought were gods changes forever.

Now only a few stand between humankind and annihilation: Raithe, reluctant to embrace his destiny as the God Killer; Suri, a young seer burdened by signs of impending doom; and Persephone, who must overcome personal tragedy to lead her people. The Age of Myth is over. The time of rebellion has begun.

Magic, fantasy, and mythology collide in Michael J. Sullivan’s Legends of the First Empire series:

Michael is one smooth author

He just never disappoints. His stories always leave you wanting more. He is excellent at building characters that you become invested in. He adds all the right touches and moves at a satisfying pace. He is an author you can always count on to give you a great read. Love the narrator as well and know him from many books.

Couldn’t wait to read book 2

Excellent performance and very gripping story. Highly recommend to all fantasy fans! Reminiscent of Robert Jordan at his finest or Brandon Sanderson

Sullivan nails it!

Prequels to a series that I love, are often just OK and rarely live up to the original series...not this one!
Although it's not your typical prequel involving the same characters as the original Riyria revelations books, it's a history that shapes the world before Royce and Hadrian begin their adventures together.
The books from Revelations to Chronicles and now Legends of the first Empire are by far my favorite series to read or listen to.

I could listen to Tim Gerard Reynolds narrate the assembly instructions for some Swedish furniture and still enjoy it!

Excellent story

First book of the series and it started off strong. All of the characters developed throughout the plot. I am excited to move to the next book.

A prequel is better if you haven't read the series

I was a bit dubious about this, due to the author's prologue about it being a prequel to the Riyria stories, which I had not read. It quickly got my interest and usurped my daily schedule.

A warning: This is one of those books that end earlier than I expected, in order to present a chapter from the sequel.

So now I have started reading the sequel.

read beautifully by Tim Gerard Reynolds.

First of a new series. Myth and magic abounds. this book held my attention from chapter 1 till the end.
Michael Sullivan is a genius with his tales of life in yet another fantasy world a only he can create. I am about to purchase book two can't wait to see how our hero's and heroines proceed in the battle for rights and freedom and intrigue is about to unravel in book 2.

An ear turner

I love a good story especially one told so well. I found myself listening to the book throughout the night. The narrators female voices threw me off a couple of times but not enough to turn me away.
