About this listen
If you loved A Man Called Ove, then prepare to be delighted as Jamaican immigrant Hubert rediscovers the world he'd turned his back on this "warm, funny" novel (Good Housekeeping).
In weekly phone calls to his daughter in Australia, widower Hubert Birdpaints a picture of the perfect retirement, packed with fun, friendship, and fulfillment. But it's a lie. In reality, Hubert's days are all the same, dragging on without him seeing a single soul.
Until he receives some good news - good news that in one way turns out to be the worst news ever, news that will force him out again, into a world he has long since turned his back on. The news that his daughter is coming for a visit.
Now Hubert faces a seemingly impossible task: to make his real life resemble his fake life before the truth comes out. Along the way Hubert stumbles across a second chance at love, renews a cherished friendship, and finds himself roped into an audacious community scheme that seeks to end loneliness once and for all....
Life is certainly beginning to happen to Hubert Bird. But with the origin of his earlier isolation always lurking in the shadows, will he ever get to live the life he's pretended to have for so long?

Mostly good
Narrator was excellent ! I loved the way the story was developed with alternating past and present narratives. I loved the story too until there was about two hours left. It had so much potential but the turn it took just ruined it for me. Didn’t find it well explained or believable. Too bad. The characters were wonderful and it did remind me a little of ‘A Man Called Ove.’

heartwarming
it was a little hard to start for me, mainly due to my personal lack of knowledge to apprehense the accent. but the development of story has been really interesting and I got familiar with the speaking, the story was both sad and warm; touching and heartbreaking. it gives me A LOT to reflect and really makes me want to change my behavior to the people around me. I'd strongly recommend to listen/read this book.

Absolute win.
I never give 5 stars but this is the best thing I've read in a long time. Engaging characters, realistic storyline, good narration (crisp and not annoying) and touching. It seemed light when I chose it but had surprising depth that will leave me thinking about it for a long time. Highly recommend and would read this author again.

Stunning
A beautiful story about love, loss, tragedy and the triumph of the human spirit. An honest look at an immigrant’s story, and wanting to make a good life for oneself.
