About this listen
What happens when a man of today's overconnected world sets off alone across the Pacific at the age of 71? Christian Williams, a veteran sailor and writer, planned a 6,000-mile voyage as a test of his own seamanship and endurance, and to fulfill a lifelong goal. But he found his focus quickly turning from the surrounding sea to all of us. Is anyone the same person when no one else is there? Do we dare to find out? In a new world of soaring seabirds, violent storms, and majestic emptiness, Williams discovered answers to questions he had never asked about who we are, why we sail, and the universal fear of being alone.
Alone Together is a complete technical course in offshore sailing technique and yacht preparation, and a philosophical inquiry into what it takes to be truly alive in the 21st century.

Story
Veteran sailor and writer Christian Williams invites us along once again on a 5,000-mile voyage of discovery around the North Pacific. Equipped with a new boat, a well-stocked toolbox, and the entire history of philosophic thought, he takes us as crew through squalls and calms deep into a laboratory of the universe that exists only out of sight of land. Funny, erudite, and at times deeply personal, Philosophy of Sailing explores who we are and how encounters with the unknown can be a path to revelation and joy.

With hundreds of thousands of nautical miles under his keel, John’s adventures have taken him several times around the world.

How, at the age of 37, did this self-proclaimed novice go from small ponds to the big sea? Now with a new afterword that looks back at how one transatlantic race changed his life, Woods takes listeners on a spectacular journey not just of traveling across the world, but of being tried in fire, learning by accepting challenges, appreciating the beauty of the open water, and living to tell about it.

Story
When you read about someone sailing around the world, it’s usually a dotcom millionaire or a professional adventurer. Brave or Stupid? tells a very different story. It’s an everyman tale about a middle-aged, seasick electrician with no money who suddenly and for no reason decides to sail around the world. It’s the story of Yanne Larsson, a man with a dream born not out of a passion for sailing or a search for identity or the need for a challenge. This is the story of a simple handshake. One of the old-fashioned, ironclad ones.

What a trip!
This book has far surpassed my expectations. Williams takes us on an amazing voyage on Thelonius and engages us in such interesting conversations! This book at once inspires me to sail and cautions me to learn more and prepare thoroughly. More importantly it challenges me to consider myself and my relationships with my environment and especially with those I know and love. Thank you Mr Williams for sharing this with us.

Glad I came along for the ride!
As a cruising sailor myself, I am aware of how long cruises can sometimes be a bit slow and repetitive . I was afraid this might limit the entertainment value of the story. Boy was I wrong! The author brings you along as crewmate and co-captain and never fails to entertain you with the trials and tribulations of such a courageous journey. Be prepared to hook on your jack lines and go for a ride!

Quality single handed sailing conent.
Probably everyone in my life must have heard me talking about some guy who sailed to Hawaii alone in 21 days because of this book! I stumbled upon CW on Youtube as he's got a rich library of tips and journeys documented on there. I usually play my audio books sped up to acquire more content, but not with this book. I wanted to take my time, to relax, to feel myself alone on a 32 foot boat in the trade winds of the Pacific Ocean. Thank you for writing this book. I'm listening to his second book now, and who knows maybe the third soon.
Spolier alert:
CW has a way with his word to capture your attention, your imagination. When he talks about hearing childrens laughter on the deck I can hear it too. When he talks about how we are never alone, we always have the memories and the conversations of people in our heads, his writing enlightened me to tap into those thoughts when I'm alone as well.

A delightful journey
I loved being an imaginary member of the crew for this singlehanded sailing trip. A gentle monologue exploring the delights and anxieties of embarking on this passage to Hawaii from California.
