Publisher's Summary

The second book in the acclaimed Licanius Trilogy by James Islington.

In the wake of a devastating attack, an amnesty has been declared for all Augurs - finally allowing them to emerge from hiding and openly oppose the dark forces massing against the land of Andarra. As the Augur Davian and his new allies hurry north toward the ever-weakening Boundary, however, fresh horrors along their path suggest that their reprieve may have come far too late.

His ally in the Capital, the new Northwarden, contends with assassins and politicians and uncovers a dangerous political secret. Meanwhile, their compatriot Asha begins a secret investigation into the disappearance of the Shadows.

And Caeden races against time to fulfill his treacherous bargain with the Lyth, but as more and more of his memories return, he begins to realize that the two sides in this ancient war may not be as clear-cut as they first seemed....

A good story but ...

All around this is a good series. The narration is classical Michael Kramer. Top shelf. The story is interesting, and I do recommend the books. I do have one caveat. I find that it is easy to get lost as to where one is in the story. There are so many characters with insufficient character development you find yourself asking, "Who is this and what role does he/she have in the story? "The story would have been better with fewer characters and a stronger focus on the various individual's roles. A second read helps a lot but that should not be necessary. For me it is what makes the difference between a four- and five-star rating. It is not actually fair to compare this work to the Wheel of Time series. In my opinion, no one does character development better than Robert Jordan. Honestly, the Licanius Trilogy just does not compare. Having said that, it is a good story and I do not regret purchasing all three books.

Great listen!

This part 2 does not disappoint, the story only gets more involved and more engaging. Plot twists and a lot of action keep the story rolling, keep the reader guessing. I’m very much looking forward to the third book. Te performance here is solid and continual. Michael Kramer has grown on me!

I love this trilogy!

Great story and characters. The characters continued to be developed from the last book and more questions and answers are brought up. I love the philosophy and moral questions this book brings to light. Fantastic listen and narrated beautifully.

A Strong Sequel

The second installment in the trilogy brings a lot of answers to questions from the first book while also leaving the reader with a desire to know how the protagonists' visions come to pass. The exploration of fate and free will is done very well, with all of the point of view characters having pivotal roles in the unfolding story. The twists and turns work well and new things are introduced with finesse as they fit into key plot elements. I'm very much looking forward to the final book.

So Many Plot Twists

I really enjoyed the second book in the Licanius trilogy. The story picks up where The Shadow of What was Lost ended and proceeds at a breakneck pace. The amount of clever plot twists is incredible. I found the ending of the first book to be one the most entraining endings I read last year, and the ending of this book is just as shocking!

James Islington’s writing style even improved while writing this novel, I found that there were more memorable lines than in the previous one.

My only criticism is the same one I had for The Shadow of What was Lost and that is that the characters are a little flat. Islington describes their feelings, but their actions don’t always show their feelings. For example, if a character dies Islington describes the sadness other characters feel, but then events move them along before we, as the readers, can appreciate what everyone is thinking and feeling.

Islington doesn’t spend a lot of time reviewing events from the previous novel, so I suggest you listen to this shortly after finishing the first book.

Michael Kramer could read a grocery list and I would listen to him. Fantastic work here!

Lots of context, great hype book for the third.

Good follow up to the first in the series. Does a great job at getting you excited for the next step in the story. Lots of surprising twists and reveals.

Also a lot of explaining magic. Not the worst, but also not the most gripping way to show off the mystery and power of a world.

Thrilling and Dramatic

Even better than the previous novel, this story weaves in more world building, drama, tension, and heaps more action. I loved every minute of this book and can’t wait to see what comes next.

Davian had a great journey with new and old allies, discovering secrets about not only the Augurs but his role in what is to come.

Weir had the most emotional storyline, dealing with not only his burdens as Northwarden, but the truth about his parents and the way their beliefs challenged him.

Asha was also a compelling character, using her skills as a spy to uncover all sorts of secrets and manage her alliances and friendships.

Caeden had one of the most compelling arcs. As his memories returned, he struggled to maintain his faith in what was right versus what he re-learned. I honestly enjoyed many of the conversations he had with characters from his past, both allies and enemies.

The world building remains immersive thanks to the expert writing and style. The book also contains plenty more visceral actions scenes while balancing the emotional stakes.

I’ve deeply enjoyed this book and with its many cliffhangers, I’m eager to see how it all wraps up in the end. Highly recommended for anyone who loves epic, sweeping fantasy!

Give this series a chance!

Despite the clunky titles of these books, they are really good. I love Michael Kramer’s narration. If you like anything by Brandon Sanderson you’ll like this series. Interesting world, original and creative mythology, compelling characters, and a plot full of unexpected twists and turns. I really enjoyed these.
