About this listen

In this debut psychological thriller, two women on opposite sides of the law delve into the heart of a years-old crime in order to stop a future one.

Claire Fontaine is convinced that her ex-husband killed their teenage daughter all those years back and believes he’s capable of killing again. When she sees him move in with another woman, to play stepfather for a girl the same age as the one she lost, Claire tries desperately to warn the new bride of the danger her family is in. But when the woman dismisses her admonishments, she feels she must take matters into her own hands and stop the crime she failed to stop before.

Sloane Wilson left the LAPD to work as a “sin eater”, a contractor for hire who specializes in cleaning up inconvenient situations - situations which, for whatever reason, are better handled outside the law. Like, for example, an ex-wife who stalks her former husband, throws paint on his door, and makes vague, violent threats to his new wife. A domestic dispute like that can get messy when the cops are called; plus, there is a risk that their presence will aggravate the woman in question.

As Sloane investigates her newest mission, however, she finds that there is more to it than meets the eye, uncovering a history of trauma that casts aspersions on the stories of both Claire and Sloane’s client. In a case where objective truth is increasingly muddled by passions, suspicions, and fears, she soon loses the ability to distinguish fact from fiction. But Sloane knows one thing for certain: Sometimes the only way to prevent a crime is by committing one.

What an AMAZING and interesting book. I loved it.
Had me hooked from start to finish as I was running on time for it to be excluded from my library.
I listened non stop until the end.
Absolutely spell binding and interesting story. I would have been so disappointed in missing out on it. This author had me enthralled from beginning to end. The narration was impeccable. A true suspense with intense tenacity for the truth. Loved and enjoyed every moment.
Thank you Audible plus.
Absolutely worth a CREDIT.

This one fell quite short for me. After several chapters in I was still bored; nothing was immediately engaging or enticing. The narrator was somewhat monotone and could/did put me to sleep. Had potential - just wasn’t executed that well.

Meh. Quite bland.

I thought this was a fantastic psychological crime thriller written by Stéphanie Buelens, and deftly narrated by Erica Sullivan (especially in France French, not Canadian French)! So much domestic violence is perpetrated against females in domestic settings, and they get away with it! This book was littered with it, but it seemed so calm. Which is why I gave it a 4 instead of 5 for overall performance. Maybe that's supposed to evoke society's response? ARGH!

Fantastic psychological crime thriller!

Quite enjoyed the whole book. Good story, good characters. Nice narration.
My only complaint is as a fully bilingual French Canadian. I would have enjoyed it more if the narrator had a complete grasp of the French language as it’s indicated that she should. Her accent is hard abs and it doesn’t roll easily as it should. Completely passable if your first language isn’t French. All the same. She did a great job.

Enjoyable, but…
