Publisher's Summary

Jim McDoniel's debut novel, An Unattractive Vampire, is a darkly comic urban fantasy of ancient horrors in suburban cities.

After three centuries trapped underground, thousand-year-old Yulric Bile, also known as The Cursed One, The Devil's Apprentice, He Who Worships the Slumbering Horrors, awakens only to find that no one believes he is a vampire. Apparently he's just too ugly. Modern vampires, he soon discovers, are pretty, weak, and, most disturbing of all, good. Determined to reestablish his bloodstained reign, Yulric sets out to correct this disgusting turn of events or, at the very least, murder the person responsible.

With the help of part-vampire wannabe Amanda; Simon, the eight-year-old reincarnation of his greatest foe; and a cadre of ancient and ugly horrors, Yulric prepares to battle the glamorous undead. But who will win the right to determine, once and for all, what it truly means to be a vampire?

What the critics say

"Jim McDoniel's first novel is quirky, wild, and weird, and definitely for those who hate those sexy vampire stereotypes who like their monsters nice and gross." (Geeks of Doom)

Entertaining!

Typically I don’t go for fiction but my friend recommended it. It’s very funny and I enjoyed the perspective.

A Fun Listen

This is a fun story, with quite a few chuckles...I enjoyed going back to it time and time again for sometimes silly fare, with astute observations of the ridiculousness of certain aspects of our modern society squeezed in there for a laugh. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Laugh out loud funny

Enjoyable lampooning of the state of the vampire legend in this day and age. If you're looking for something light but subversive, this book will entertain you. #Audible1

Meh

The narrator for this was fantastic, easily best thing about this. The story itself? It's really hilarious in spots, especially when it lampoons the pop culture around vampires, and the whole vampire mythos. But, it doesn't seem to know where it's going. There's also a moment or two where the novel seems to contradict itself, or something that's rather key happens in a very confusing manner. Very interesting premise, had a lot of potential, but there's a lot of problems with it's structure.
