Story
“To treat, even to cure, is not always to heal.” In this expansive cultural history of the treatment and healing of mental suffering, Kay Jamison writes about psychotherapy, what makes a great healer, and the role of imagination and memory in regenerating the mind. From the trauma of the battlefields of the twentieth century, to those who are grieving, depressed, or with otherwise unquiet minds, to her own experience with bipolar illness, Jamison demonstrates how remarkable psychotherapy and other treatments can be when done well.

Story
More than 30 years ago, Dr. Ronald R. Fieve gained national recognition for his pioneering treatment of what was then known as "manic-depression". Since then, he has focused on patients with mild bipolarity, also known as Bipolar II. With the right treatment, these patients can turn their illness into an asset. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Fieve presents a highly successful program that allows Bipolar II patients to harness the creativity and energy of their hypomanic "highs" while minimizing the potentially devastating "lows" of depression.

Publisher's Summary
NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A deeply powerful memoir about bipolar illness that has both transformed and saved lives—with a new preface by the author.
Dr. Jamison is one of the foremost authorities on manic-depressive (bipolar) illness; she has also experienced it firsthand. For even while she was pursuing her career in academic medicine, Jamison found herself succumbing to the same exhilarating highs and catastrophic depressions that afflicted many of her patients, as her disorder launched her into ruinous spending sprees, episodes of violence, and an attempted suicide.
Here Jamison examines bipolar illness from the dual perspectives of the healer and the healed, revealing both its terrors and the cruel allure that at times prompted her to resist taking medication.
What the critics say
“An invaluable memoir of manic depression, at once medically knowledgeable, deeply human and beautifully written ... at times poetic, at times straightforward, always unashamedly honest.”—The New York Times Book Review
“Stands alone in the literature of manic-depression for its bravery, brilliance and beauty.”—Oliver Sacks
“Jamison’s [strength] is in the gutsy way she has made her disease her life’s work and in her brilliant ability to convey its joys and its anguish.... Extraordinary.” —Washington Post Book World

Amazing, I can do hard things.
I loved this book, I will be listening to it multiple times it felt a lot like my journal and my psychology textbook with so many connections throughout. It made me feel seen, safe, and like I am enough. Thank you. I have had terrible experiences with doctors and trying to understand my illness it took until my darkness when I really fell and couldn't pick myself up that I reached school; before then i was told that I could never do it. your book gave me more drive to fulfill my dreams and like I can do it.

Bipolar and the courage to face it.
By far the best book written from the view point of one who is bipolar, her journey, honesty and informative to not only know the signs of bipolar, the treatment and as the journey continues to face the bipolar with courage.

Amazing story
I have listened to this book non stop in a one day. Very deep and touching story which definitely will make me think of it for a couple of weeks. The world needs such stories to make us understand how people near us can feel and struggle, to make us care more, to remove stigma from mental disorders and to motivate others to study about them. I'm highly impressed and inspired by this book. Highly recommend it.
