About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Translated by Louise and Aylmer Maude.

Anna is a beautiful, intelligent woman whose passionate affair with the dashing Count Vronsky leads her to ruin. But her story is also about a search for meaning, and by twinning it with that of Levin, an awkward idealist whose happy marriage and domestic trials form the backdrop for a similar quest, Tolstoy creates a rich and complex masterpiece that has captured the imagination of readers and listeners for decades.

The Vintage Classic Russians Series: Published for the 100th anniversary of the 1917 Russian Revolution, these are must-have editions of six epic masterpieces that have survived controversy, censorship and suppression to influence decades of thought and artistic expression.

A Must Read

A long listen, I left and came back to it a few times over about a year, but I always enjoyed listening. I highly recommend this book to anyone. It captures the humanity of its characters uniquely; they are real and flawed and only some of them change, and even if you hate them, by the end you can usually predict what they will do. This book feels like opening up the walls of a real family's home, and watching them live for a while. Sometimes it's dull and slow for a bit, sometimes a lot happens very fast, I think that adds to the charm. Cannot recommend enough.

Also, the narrator is excellent. Very posh accent and her French is not too bad, mostly I just enjoy the sound of her voice. Definitely pick a narrator you like for this one, you'll be hearing a lot of them.
