About this listen
Kathleen Winter’s poignant debut novel was a finalist for the Scotiabank Giller Prize. In it, Winter explores society’s views of gender identity through the eyes of a child born with male and female sex organs. At their doctor’s urging, the Blakes decide to raise their child as a boy, Wayne, giving him hormones to suppress his feminine physical traits. But after discovering the secret about his body, Wayne decides to stop taking his medication and lets his body develop naturally.

Unforgettable
I read the book Annabel years ago and loved it then. Listening to it I fell in love with the story over again. The premise is unusual, interesting and sad with a beautiful heartwarming ending.

Heartbreakingly Beautiful
I cried, a lot but it was the good kind of crying, the kind of crying that feels cathartic because you've just witnessed something heartbreaking and real.

Heartrending
The author is a master of detail and character, using both to carefully weave a narrative that immerses the reader into the humanity of the unknown, but which becomes intimately familiar. Then, there is redemption of everything that has built into anxiety and need for the reader. Beautifully told, extremely meaningful. The narrator is very good, although I always listen at increased speed.
