About this listen

How far would you go to protect your daughter?

From the first moment single mother Nicolette Winchester held her daughter in her arms, she knew she'd do everything in her power to keep her safe. Now 18 years old, Ella is bright, kind, and a cello prodigy headed for Juilliard. Nicolette can't help but feel proud of the young woman her daughter's become.

Then Ella calls home one night. There's been an accident. A classmate is dead. And Ella is the only one on the scene. To protect her daughter, Nicolette makes an unthinkable decision: hide the body, and ensure her daughter is kept out of the ensuing scandal.

There's only one problem. Someone knows what she did.

And that person is going to make sure Nicolette pays.

Contains mature themes.

Review

The Mother is clearly a complete nut job and the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree in both her mothers case and Ella’s
I read the previous review and almost didn’t listen but…. I found it enjoyable and couldn’t not finish it … a crazy plot but as the main character is crazy it all fits perfectly.
I will listen to other books by Marissa.

Crazy good story

Firstly let me say this was a disturbing story in that the main character was crazy and so messed up and her daughter even worse or just as crazy.
However, having said that, I could not put down this book. I had to finish it. This is one of those books that was so unusual that it definitely pulled you into the drama. You just had to listen to the very end. What was so unexpected in this book is that you tend to relate to the mother in a way trying to help her child. However, the lengths she went to was unimaginable. The ending was good and ties everything together. Very nicely narrated by Lauren Ezzo.
This book was great in reminding everyone, to think carefully of how far you are willing to go to protect a loved one and when to be truthful and get authorities involved.
Regardless of the story line which was so different and fascinating at the same time, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Somewhat satisfying ending . Absolutely Loved the Epilogue. I am looking forward to more books by Marissa Finch. Highly recommend a read. Thank you Audible Plus.

Insurmountably Ludicrous

Marissa Finch writes passably well - but expects too much from her readers. Protagonist and obsessively overprotective mother 'Nicolette Winchester' is quite clearly mentally ill.. but Finch still does her best to describe a person worthy of empathy trapped in an unfair situation (ie. just trying to help her beautiful, talented, precious daughter in the face of police suspicions and extortive blackmailers).. counting on readers/listeners to care what she is going through. Unfortunately, the attempts to overcome the visceral dislike that I felt for the character fell flat. Nicolette is an awful person - committing crime after crime after crime while flailing to justify them. The existence of a functioning human being this delusional strains credulity.

To be sure, Finch's setting is vividly described, most of her characters are plausible - albeit often laughably clichéd - and she knows how to build tension during a sequence.. but the author's skill couldn't convince me to set aside common sense and just immerse myself in the illusion of reality.

On the positive side, Tantor Audio producers cast this project beautifully. Lauren Ezzo admmittedly overacts emotional dialogue at times.. but her overall performance (diction, timing, timbre, cadence, tone, and voice-acting) is impressive. If given the option of consuming a text copy of 'Anything For You' or this audiobook iteration, take this one any day of the week.

Great production values can't make up for a hard-to-swallow scenario, sadly. This 4/10-star recording is a reasonable time investment as a 'Plus' selection, I guess.. but save your Credit for something more realistic should they ask.
