About this listen

Noah didn’t expect much from entering the virtual reality world of Asgard’s Fall.

Even the danger of the experimental full immersion technology didn’t put him off. It beat living in a nursing home, and it was supposed to let him feel young again...at least until modern medicine and his body gave out.

But there was something wrong with Asgard’s Fall. Most of the time, the “gods” running the game didn’t act like AIs were supposed to. Some of the players took things too seriously, like they knew something about the game that Noah didn’t. Forced to rely on skills he abandoned a lifetime ago and new digital abilities that resemble ancient magics more than modern code, Noah has to unravel the mysteries behind Asgard’s Fall. And in doing so, discover an ancient threat that has forced a world long hidden from mankind into the light.

Wow!

The story is FANTASTIC, but I feel Noah should have come to understand quicker how everything worked. All in all it was an amazing experience.

A deep, dark fantasy

Asgard's Fall is one of the best novels I've read in the LitRPG genre.

Unlike a lot of LitRPGs, the novel takes its time, establishing the main character and his family before getting into the "game." From there, it's a bit of a whirlwind, as things spiral out of control rapidly. At first it seems like a typical 'stuck in the game' book, but soon you realize that there's a lot more going on. There's a huge twist in the book, and it gets much darker.

The story is filled with mythology - fans of the Norse, Greek and Egyptian gods will enjoy the references peppered throughout the book, as well as the gods that make their appearance, narrated expertly by Pavi Proczko. There's also a lot of relationship building, although the book is neither a romance nor a buddy novel. Instead, the relationships explore family - something that is rare. Even rarer is when it's done well, like here. Colour me impressed! I also confess that as a Canadian I enjoyed the references to Canada in the book.

I do have two complaints. One is that, like so many LitRPG novels, you get tired of hearing character sheets again and again. I really don't need to hear about our main character's blessings he can choose from for the ninth time, thanks! The other is that the book gets much darker than I expected. There's death, to be sure, but also unwinnable situations that make me feel frustrated - a feeling the main character shares. The fact that he rises above it to try and make a difference makes this darkness oh so powerful, though.

Can't wait!

I really hope the second book will come out on audible soon as I found this book addictive!
Very detailed and action-packed story, the characters are interesting, and Pavi does great work with the voices.

Loved the Canadian flavor sprinkled about as well!

Outstanding story and audio performance

This audio performance of a captivating book enhanced what had been an extremely enjoyable read. Listening to the performance brought out details my eye seems to have skimmed over when I read Asgards Fall and increased my appreciation of the depth of Hinshaw's plot and the quality of the research standing behind the novel. K look forward to the next book and next audio book in the series.
