About this listen
From New York Times best-selling powerhouse Roxane Gay, Ayiti is a powerful collection exploring the Haitian diaspora experience. Originally published by a small press, this edition will make Gay’s debut widely available for the first time, including several new stories.
In Ayiti, a married couple seeking boat passage to America prepares to leave their homeland. A young woman procures a voodoo love potion to ensnare a childhood classmate. A mother takes a foreign soldier into her home as a boarder, and into her bed. And a woman conceives a daughter on the bank of a river while fleeing a horrific massacre, a daughter who later moves to America for a new life but is perpetually haunted by the mysterious scent of blood.
These early stories showcase Gay’s prowess as "one of the voices of our age” (National Post, Canada).

A loosely linked collection of stories
Is there a name for this type of literature? It is a collection of short stories that at first seem unrelated, but they are all from one woman's life. Her life is set in Haiti and the USA. Over time, questions from one story are answered in another, filling in the blanks and curiosities. It has opened me to more short story collections in the future.

strong storytelling of short stories
Powerful storytelling- sexual and sensual writing and an appreciation of the shared perception of Haiti's culture.

Loved This!
This was interesting. I liked that a lot of the stories "connected" even though they were all separate stories. I really like Gay's writing style and I am sure that her voice has gotten even stronger since as this was her debut. I definitely enjoyed listening to this as an audio to hear different inflection in voices. Really enjoyed this!

Not what I was expecting
This book is a collaboration of lot of short stories. I found the stories were too short, and although some of them started to peak my interest they ended quickly and it felt like the stories didn't give you a chance to really get insight into the characters and you are left hanging not knowing how they end.
There are a few graphically written erotic stories which in my opinion weren't really necessary but again, they were too short to actually pull me in and get me excited to find out more.
This book just wasn't for me.
