About this listen

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Anathem, Reamde, and Cryptonomicon comes an exciting and thought-provoking science fiction epic - a grand story of annihilation and survival spanning five thousand years.

What would happen if the world were ending?

A catastrophic event renders the earth a ticking time bomb. In a feverish race against the inevitable, nations around the globe band together to devise an ambitious plan to ensure the survival of humanity far beyond our atmosphere, in outer space.

But the complexities and unpredictability of human nature coupled with unforeseen challenges and dangers threaten the intrepid pioneers, until only a handful of survivors remain....

Five thousand years later, their progeny - seven distinct races now three billion strong - embark on yet another audacious journey into the unknown...to an alien world utterly transformed by cataclysm and time: Earth.

A writer of dazzling genius and imaginative vision, Neal Stephenson combines science, philosophy, technology, psychology, and literature in a magnificent work of speculative fiction that offers a portrait of a future that is both extraordinary and eerily recognizable. As he did in Anathem, Cryptonomicon, the Baroque Cycle, and Reamde, Stephenson explores some of our biggest ideas and perplexing challenges in a breathtaking saga that is daring, engrossing, and altogether brilliant.

Great book... ok performance

I've read a lot of reviews that are pretty savage about the narrative, I didn't think it was that bad. It didn't blow me away, but it isn't nearly as bad as some people are making it out to be. Try listening to a book by 'robotic voice' on pdf. Now that is bad :).
Others complain that the story loses its focus, I personally loved how it switched time frames. I felt the characters realistic and could easily see how people would break down into the various factions.
I have read a couple stories by Neal Stephenson, and this one didn't disappoint.

One of the best science fiction books that I have read read

It is remarkable the research that was done for this book the amount was of information and how is presented is really impressive.

The future of humanity presented in a scientific speculation with very good results highly recommended. Planning to read more books from the author.

Interesting Ideas

Greatly enjoyed the what if factor. Leaves plenty of room to ponder fanciful ideas. Gives rise to deep questions about human behaviour and our future. Thought provoking but not too heavy.

So boring I nearly died

This book is painfully slow. Sure there’s lots of stuff happening but it’s all just story and not enough plot. Also the voices the narrator uses for men are pretty bad. Especially the men with foreign accents!

loved it all

lots of reviews say the first 2 parts are great while the third falls off. I felt the third part really tied off the book perfectly in a way I wasn't expecting.

excellent book

I'm not a big sci-fi fan but this book transcends that with exceptional realism and scientific possibility. Also, it's like 2 books in one, both really interesting.

Too much detail for me, but amazing story overall

I'm an *engineer* and it was too much detail for me! However, if you're into that kind of thing, you'll LOVE this; that said, the story made up for the parts I found draggy, and I was especially impressed with Mary Robinette Kowal's distinct voices for so many characters in the first part of the book.
