Publisher's Summary

A deadly coup within the Wizard's Guild leaves the Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, gravely injured, and his ward Ciri missing in the third novel of Andrzej Sapkowski's groundbreaking epic fantasy series that inspired the hit Netflix show and the blockbuster video games.

The Wizards Guild has been shattered by a coup, an uprising that has left Geralt seriously injured.

The Witcher is supposed to be a guardian of the innocent, a protector of those in need, a defender against powerful and dangerous monsters that prey on men in dark times. But now that dark times have fallen upon the world, Geralt is helpless until he has recovered.

While war rages across the lands, the future of magic is under threat and those sorcerers who survive are determined to protect it. It's an impossible situation in which to find one girl - Ciri, the heiress to the throne of Cintra - until a rumor places her in the Niflgaard court, preparing to marry the Emperor.

Injured or not, Geralt has a rescue mission on his hands.

What the critics say

"The character interplay is complex, unsentimental and anchored in brutal shared history. All bodes well for twisty plotting to come." ( SFX)
"Sapkowski revitalizes the genre with energetic and compelling writing. A breath of fresh air in a well-worn genre. Don't miss it!" ( Dreamwatch)
"Like Mieville and Gaiman, Sapkowski takes the old and makes it new." ( Foundation)

Peter Kenny is Fantastic

Peter Kenny's narration is nothing short of fantastic, but the story itself is disappointingly unsatisfying.

A baptism of fire for readers as well

Love how this story is told in such a reasonably complicated way with lots of wit.

Best of the series so far

Alot of the other books were more development but this book was pure fantasy adventure at its finest. Really well done and makes up for the somewhat lack luster Blood of Elves.

It’s Filler, but Delicious Blueberry Pie Filler

To be honest, not much happens in this book. The majority of the chapters focus on Geralt, he is still looking for Ciri. He spends most of the novel reminding me of the main character in an early David Eddings book, meaning he spends the book finding people to travel with and building up his party. This is done in a fairly exciting way, but still, nothing much happens to advice the plot forward. I suspect character driven readers will enjoy this book, but plot driven readers won’t.

Something to note, my edition claims to be the Booktrack Edition, but it isn’t. I listened to a sample of the “traditional” edition before buying it and realized it was the Booktrack Edition. So I bought this edition, titled “Baptism of Fire: Booktrack Edition: The Witcher.” It is really disappointing that Audible didn’t catch this error, hopefully it is fixed now.

As usual Peter Kenny was fantastic.

One of the best narratives I’ve ever heard.

The Witcher is coming to Netflix and I hate the idea of not knowing the “true spirit” of a book before I see it. Just like The Game of Thrones, it’s a world of its own but with one common thread. A more focused story with fantastic characters, The Witcher does not disappoint. And the narrator is beyond brilliant. Peter Kenny narrated books will now be in my searches and in my wish list. Enjoy!

The Wolven Storm

#Audible1 If you haven't heard of the Witcher Saga then you are missing out. This series follows the main character Geralt of Rivia, a Witcher, in his travels across the Continent in search of employment in his trade; that of hunting and slaying dangerous monsters that prey upon humans. This polish masterpiece was written by Andrzej Sapkowski and is the inspiration behind the three internationally acclaimed Witcher Games and the impending Netflix series. The books are heavily steeped in Slavic lore and are offer a startling insight into the human condition making us ask who the true monsters are and who are the ones who need saving. The world doesn't need a hero. It needs a professional. WORTH THE LISTEN/READ
