About this listen

After The Joker’s death, Batman and Gotham City face a mysterious new threat in this direct sequel to Tim Burton’s iconic Batman.

The Joker is dead, but not forgotten. Gotham City is saved, but it is still not safe. By night, its new symbol of hope, Batman, continues his fight to protect the innocent and the powerless. By day, his alter ego, Bruce Wayne, wonders whether there may someday be a future beyond skulking the city’s rooftops or the cavernous halls of his stately manor alongside the ever-dutiful Alfred Pennyworth.

But even after death, the Clown Prince of Crime’s imprint can be seen in more than just the pavement. Remnants from The Joker’s gang are leading wannabes fascinated by his bizarre mystique on a campaign of arson that threatens the city—even as it serves greedy opportunists, including millionaire Max Shreck. And survivors of exposure to The Joker’s chemical weapon Smylex continue to crowd Gotham City’s main hospital.

To quell the chaos, Batman needs more than his cape and his well-stocked Utility Belt. Bruce Wayne is forced into action, prompting a partnership with a charismatic scientist to help solve the health crisis. But as he works in both the shadows and the light, Bruce finds himself drawn deeper into Gotham City’s turmoil than ever before, fueling his obsession to save the city—an obsession that has already driven a wedge between him and Vicki Vale. The loyal Alfred, who had hoped Bruce’s efforts as Batman could help him find closure, finds the opposite happening. Nightmares begin to prompt Bruce to ask new questions about the climactic events in the cathedral, and investigations by Commissioner Gordon and reporter Alexander Knox into the arsons only amplify his concerns.

Having told the people of Gotham City that they’d earned a rest from crime, Batman finds the forces of evil growing ever more organized—and orchestrated—by a sinister hand behind the scenes. The World’s Greatest Detective must solve the greatest mystery of all: Could The Joker have somehow survived? And could he still have the last laugh against the people of Gotham City?

Great ideas and cool links between Batman and Batman Returns.

i really enjoyed the ideas put forward in this sequel prequel. There are references to future characters, characters we did not see in the movies and clever mysteries. The narrative performance is fantastic. you could argue all that you would need to make it a radio play is some music and sound effects. It felt like a cast even though it was one narrator. If you are a fan of the Tim Burton Batman movies I highly recommend this book.

Great narration

This was a really excellent book. Well-conceived, well-written, and a great expansion of the Tim Burton Batman world. Certainly a great read overall. The narration was spot on. The narrator was emphatic and great with balancing all of the characters accents, etc. My only very minor gripe is some of the dialogue of the certain characters seemed inauthentic to their character from the movies. Some phrases and words would not have been spoken by the actors or who they would be playing. Certain words and phrases spoken by Batman, Alfred, Knox, etc, I couldn’t conceive of actually being spoken in the movies. They seemed out of character.

Overall though, highly recommended. I can’t wait for the sequel.

Seamless Expansion

This book works so perfectly between Batman and Batman Returns. The characterizations and atmosphere fit Burton’s original vision, and the plot is incredibly well scripted.

It stands alone, but also sets up a sequel. Can’t wait for the next one.

Love the return to the epic that began 35 years ago

So thankful that this was published! Enjoyed it very much and the faithfulness to the Gotham we saw in ‘89 and ‘92.

I SO HOPE MORE ARE BEING WRITTEN and released on audiobook. TAKE MY MONEY

Voice acting could attempt to sound more like the movie characters, and music would be amazing if the rights allowed for the use of the themes, but even if that doesn’t happen, I’d love to see more— a story to realize the Tim Burton Riddler plans, and a follow through on 1989 Harvey Dent. Exciting!! Great 😁😁😁

Great As An 89' Fan, Okay As a Batman Reader

I've really enjoyed it. My only two criticism's are, as much as it makes sense regarding bruce's ptsd, I feel exhausted from having a "joker" centric story again as he has been shoved into almost every batman story over the past decade and his, albeit fake, inclusion in resurrection felt like going through a variation of arkham knight's story. I hope joker will be avoided in future stories. My favorite parts from that are hearing selina and max's experiences with joker/jack and I feel their inclusion was a fantastic way to bridge the gap.

My other gripe is with the audiobook. There is no atmosphere. No sound fx, no music. The 89 soundtrack would have ideal to use in its entirety and it felt like a disappointing decision to not add any atmospheric audio especially coming off of star wars audiobooks that excel in that.

I am looking forward to revolution and I hope to "see" more of harvey and fully incorporate robin and batgirl as the comics have started to.

I have been inspired by so many scenes in resurrection which I am currently painting up.
