Critical Role
About this listen
Uncover the lost years of Critical Role’s unrelentingly upbeat undead spellcaster in this original prequel novel to Laudna’s adventures with Bells Hells.
For as long as she can remember, Laudna has had a friend. A mentor. A little voice whispering in her cropped ear, promising that, no matter how monstrous she becomes or how far she wanders, there will always be someone to guide her.
And so, Laudna is content.
But the thought of more—of life, of love, of the magic stirring in her still veins—is unrelenting in its familiarity. More is the dream of the young girl trapped behind the bloodstained walls of Whitestone, and the nightmare of the woman who now stalks the woods outside them. More, Laudna’s little voice reminds her, is dangerous. From Tal’Dorei to Marquet, the world is infested with heroes destined to rid their kingdoms of creatures like Laudna.
The little voice is right, she knows.
But still, she thinks of more. And when she reaches for that dream, what reaches back will change everything.
Written by USA Today bestselling author Cassandra Khaw, Critical Role: Bells Hells—What Doesn’t Break delves into the unexplored years before Laudna joined up with the crew of Bells Hells, chronicling her departure from Whitestone and her solo adventures on the road to Jrusar.

Story
Vex and Vax have always been outsiders. A harsh childhood in the elite elven city of Syngorn quickly taught them not to rely on others. Now, freed from the expectations of their exacting father and the scornful eyes of Syngorn’s elves, the cunning hunter and the conning thief have made their own way in the world of Exandria. The twins have traveled far and experienced great hardship. But with the help of Vex’s quick wit and Vax’s quicker dagger, they’ve always kept ahead of trouble. Now, unknown perils await them in the bustling city of Westruun.

Story
Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv, the orc barbarian, cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and an unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city has ever seen. However, her dreams of a fresh start filling mugs instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune’s shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners, and a different kind of resolve.

Fun Spooky
Another brilliantly written story from the Critical Role universe, this one exploring the tragic origin of Laudna. I was enthralled right from the start, having always found Laudna and her relationship with Delilah Briarwood to be an interesting one.
The story begins in Whitestone and carries through the many, many years Laudna spent with just Delilah for "company." It's a tragic story full of misunderstandings, loneliness, and tender hope. Anyone who's appreciated Laudna's story in Critical Role will definitely appreciate this book, as it it further explains why Laudna does the thing she does. I was very invested in the bond Laudna has with Delilah, as it was hardly a simple thing.
Readers will feel the lengths of time Laudna spent alone and further appreciate her efforts to find a home and friends. I loved meeting the side characters, as every one of them was flawed. The pacing was just right and the prose perfectly matched the character.
This is a must read for all Critical Role fans, and I highly recommend the audiobook, as all the performers put in excellent work.

It was ok.
I liked the story but didn't live it. I realized towards the end that this book is much like Campaign 3 in that it is sort of a take it or leave it situation. If C3 is great or just okay or bad in your mind, this book will be the same.
The voice acting is great. No complaints there. The people know the characters, in some cases very well obviously.
Normally, I find a lot of moderns storytelling lacks character development. Moments of internal conflict and learning and observations from the character's perspective are ignored. This book (again much like C3) takes it too far in the other direction.
*spoilers*
The first half of the book we find out she's essentially alone save for her unwanted passenger. Then right after seeing this is the case they'll point it out again. We got it after the first few very similar situations of people chasing her away.
The second half of the book doesn't dove very far away from this either. We get a slightly happy bad ending with one character and then suddenly she meets Imogen and apparently it's instant love. The End.
Except the Laudna/Imogen -ship was unexpected and spur of the moment in the campaign. Neither actress planned for it to be a thing and then several dozen episodes in the just happened to mistake something the other said and it happened.
I'd much rather they got to the point earlier in Act 1 to convey the loneliness. Act 2 easily was her chance to grow and make real friends. Act 3 I would've hoped was Imogen and Laudna's earliest meet up and adventures ending ag C3 began with them.
I liked TB story. Not sure if I'd say I loved it though.
