About this listen
A 2017 Nautilus Gold Award winner.
Feel like you don’t belong? You’re not alone. The world has never been more connected, yet people are lonelier than ever. Whether we feel unworthy, alienated, or anxious about our place in the world, the absence of belonging is the great silent wound of our times.
Most people think of belonging as a mythical place, and they spend a lifetime searching for it in vain. But what if belonging isn’t a place at all? What if it’s a skill that has been lost or forgotten?
With her signature depth and eloquence, Toko-pa maps a path to belonging from the inside out. Drawing on myth, stories, and dreams, she takes us into the origins of our estrangement, reframing exile as a necessary initiation into authenticity. Then she shares the competencies of belonging: a set of ancestral practices to heal our wounds and restore true belonging to our lives and to the world.

Story
Western folklore and mythology are rife with brilliantly creative, fulfilled, feisty, and furious role models for aging women, despite our culture's focus on youthfulness. In her exciting new book, mythologist and psychologist Sharon Blackie explores these archetypes, presenting them in a way sure to appeal to contemporary women. Drawing inspiration from these examples, women can reclaim midlife as a liberating, alchemical moment rich with possibility and their elder years as a path to dynamic power.

like medicine to a lonely heart
The writer beautifully explains experiences I could never put into words, like she pulled them directly out of a deep part of me I thought maybe only I had. the sincerity of the pains of feeling like an outsider are gently prompted to the surface to be soothed with love and compassion through deeply studied Knowledge and experienced wisdom. Her performance of the reading is a little dramatic, but once you get used to it and just listen to what she's saying, there is nugget after nugget of life-changing, poetically presented hope that did years-worth of healing for me in one reading. I will be re-reading this and recommending it to others.

My favourite book on Audible.
This book has become a treasured companion and I listen to it often for inspiration, meditation, reflection and even as a lullaby.
It moves me and comforts me like a warm and wise friend arriving at my door with soup and homemade bread.

Breathtaking
This book is incredible. I’m so glad the author reads it herself, you feel the words. The prose is like poetry, luscious. I’ve never read a book with so many delightful quotable phrases.
This book really speaks to the healing journey I been on all my life. Brilliant

Embodiment for the outcast/blacksheep
Incredible book for embodiment to those outcasted by mass indoctrination and remembering their true nature as spirit and bodies here to be free and heal. Incredibly written. The archetypes are deep and the mythical storytelling diverse. A blessed read

mega medicine, a totally therapeutic listen
wow. thank you so much Toko-pa for putting all of these ancient/contemporary profound processes into such beautiful, kind words... & weaving it all together with stories and dreams. it's a masterpiece. it's creative and colourful and relateable. it's as awesome and healthy as being in therapy. it puts my childhood experiences into a much broader and more compassionate perspective. it IS sometimes triggering. but I'm not shying away from that so much anymore. I'm really glad I don't agree with the other reviews; but, I know, I also find it very difficult/sometimes impossible to listen to audiobooks when I don't resonate with the narrator, or they seem unsuitable for the style of the literature. but/& it's true, something Toko-pa is a little bit "overly dramatic" with the narration. it's curious that she even talks about that being something her mom would criticise her about. I would imagine mom's like that (& kinda like mine too) tend to zero in on some part of our gifts. & hello: life IS dramatic, so whatever. I think it's appropriate. if you don't like drama I hope you aren't watching ... um... any movies, let's say. or Netflix. Anyway, what she has to say is SO greatly valuable and healing and well written, that if you can't listen to it, but are needing help with mental traps/inner critic/victim stuff/depression/anxiety/chronic pain/etc: try reading it. so worth it. thanks again Toko-pa 🙏🏵️
