Divorced, desperate, and destitute, former restaurateur Defiance Dayne finds out she has been bequeathed a house by a complete stranger. She is surprised, to say the least, and her curiosity gets the better of her. She leaves her beloved Phoenix and heads to one of the most infamous towns in America: Salem, Massachusetts.
She's only there to find out why a woman she's never met would leave her a house, a veritable castle that has seen better days. The lawyer assigned to the case practically begs her to take it off her hands, mostly because she's scared of it. The inanimate structure that, as far as Dephne can tell, has never hurt a fly.
Though it does come with some baggage. A pesky neighbor who wants her gone. A scruffy cat who's a bit of a jerk. And a handyman bathed in ink who could moonlight as a supermodel for GQ.
She decides to give it three days, and not because of the model. She feels at home in Salem. Safe. But even that comes to a screeching halt when people begin knocking on her door day and night, begging for her help to locate their lost objects.
Come to find out, they think she's a witch. And after a few mysterious mishaps, Dephne is beginning to wonder if they're right.

Absolutely Love this book
This is the first book I have listened to from this Author and I am Extremely Impressed. This book is Great! I found myself counting the minutes til I could listen to more of the book. I don’t want to reveal to much info about the story line but I can honestly say the story is interesting, exciting, funny and a little Sexy. The narrator does a Amazing job with the voices of characters. She is definitely one of the best I have ever heard. I hope there will be Many more books in this series.

Looking Forward to Next Book
Yes, this book does have a lot of the same similarities as (Charley Davidson- Grim Reaper series) and Defiance just found out she's a witch and she's 44 not in her 20's. She has a huge, old, creepy house named Percy while Charly lived in an apt. right? She's been left an inheritance and is no longer poor wondering if she can afford to buy a sandwich. It's a good start to another series by Darynda Jones and I enjoy her stories, charm and witty humor. Can't wait for the 2nd book in the series.

Liked this first book
I liked the first book enough to move on to the second one. I have been to Salem a few times as a tourist and could almost picture where Percy is located and what he would look like.
The story is good, I like listening to a story that applies to me and my age group. Some of it seems far fetched, like who finds out that they are a wealthy divoriceee with a great place to live?
It can be slow moving some times but I like the author and the narrator.

Love it, listening to next one now!
The character development was suspenseful. Anita so open minded, Defiance being very suspicious. By the end of this book Defiance was so open minded about things going on around her. You could really see her anger and happiness.

OMG grow up!
The protagonist is a space cadet with no sense of self preservation. Its painfully cringey and I was embarassed on her behalf . I tried listening with the speed turned up to get through the annoying bits faster but really there were only annoying bits. I just couldn't continue. Her grandmother seemed sensible, but she was so disrespectful not casting the damned protection charm immediately, and why didshe even answer the damned door? How could this airhead have run a business?
