Publisher's Summary

A laugh-out-loud, slice-of-life martial-arts fantasy about...farming????

Jin Rou wanted to be a cultivator. A man powerful enough to defy the heavens. A master of martial arts. A lord of spiritual power. Unfortunately for him, he died, and now I’m stuck in his body.

Arrogant Masters? Heavenly Tribulations? All that violence and bloodshed? Yeah, no thanks. I’m getting out of here.

Farm life sounds pretty great. Tilling a field by hand is fun when you’ve got the strength of ten men—though maybe I shouldn’t have fed those Spirit Herbs to my pet rooster. I’m not used to seeing a chicken move with such grace...but Qi makes everything kind of wonky, so it’s probably fine.

Instead of a lifetime of battle, my biggest concerns are building a house, the size of my harvest, and the way the girl from the nearby village glares at me when I tease her.

A slow, simple, fulfilling life in a place where nothing exciting or out of the ordinary ever happens...right?

The first volume of the blockbuster progression-fantasy series—with more than 16 million views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

Just awesome

After a lot of cultivation and litrpg books where the stakes are high and the need to grow more powerfull is necessary to survive we have this gem. Its just a lovely story about powerful man who wants nothing more than his farm to grow and have a nice life. No big stakes no world ending events just a beautiful story that i thoroughly enjoyed. Cant wait for more.

Comfort read with talking animals

I was delighted to see this in audio. I had previously read this on KU, and loved it.
For me, this is a comfort read. You do not need to be familiar with the magic kung fu world genre at all to enjoy this. It does fit within fantasy, so if you don't want fantastic elements, it might not be your thing. There are some fight scenes, but most of the book is a slice of life story about a person from our world who finds themselves reincarnated in a Xianxia world (kung fu guys trying to become all powerful). I wasn't familiar with that concept at all, but still really enjoyed the book.
The main character just wants to live a normal life, so decides to become a farmer in a quiet area. There is lots of time spent on his farming. Which is actually way more fun than it sounds.
Because it's a magic kung fu world, his animals become people in their own right, and start talking. Rest easy, no talking animals get eaten. The first to talk is his chicken, who learns kung fu. Leading to the title. Yes, the concept is out there. But it leads to a wonderful feel good story that draws you in.
This has become one of my comfort reads/listens.
It's the first in a series, but stands alone. You could stop at the end and be satisfied. That is, if you don't want more like I did.

Truly Excellent, Very Cozy and Comforting

I've been looking for this kind of content for a long time.Comforting, soothing, and hopeful without being cringey or "unrealistic". Very interested in the future books and in Podium Audio now.

A meditative story

This was such a relaxing read. Very humorous and very canadian. It was nice to read a book about Chinese fantasy with maple stryup harvesting and pancakes.

So much fun!

If you like dungeon crawler carl and he who fights with monsters, particularly if you listened to the books in that order like me. You will love Beware of Chicken. If you don't, that's a you problem.

Magic, martial arts, yellow fever, hockey and maple syrup

Super fun book however so many unanswered questions. I am expecting more story to go with this universe!

Beyond Incredible

This is one of the greatest books I've ever listened to. Top 10, maybe even top 5. Hilarious, charming, emotional. I got maybe, 2 hours of sleep last night because I couldn't stop listenint to it. absolutely wonderful. Travis Baldree was, as always, amazing.

Sentient Rooster

All I really need to tell you. very entertaining narrative that had me smiling from the beginning. I particularly love the rooster who misunderstands his name and the name of the farm.
