Story
Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

Story
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

Story
There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees, and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed, and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? We quickly silence that question, telling ourselves to be grateful, hiding our discontent—even from ourselves.

In Braving the Wilderness, Brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarization.

Freeing Book
Loved the book and Gilbertˋs narration. Was able to apply some of the suggestions and wrote out a story that I had been thinking about for several years. No longer have to worry about owning the words I write. They donˋt come out of me, only through me. For whatever resson, that simple reframe is what is freeing. Read the book and see if the same effect happens for you. Happy creating.

Pulled me out of my lull
A really peaceful voice. It made me want to listen and slow down- for me that means listening at 1x speed when I commonly want to go to at least 1.25x.
The story’s made me respect my art and myself better. I feel more at peace, more organized, less hard on myself because of this read.

Inspired Permission to Go Ahead, Be Creative
This book smashes the yardstick of external success as the metric. I am much more selective around which ideas I will chose to hatch. It may be a great idea but it’s ok if it’s not for me. It will find the right person. I am more curious less judgemental of failure. Best concept of the book paraphrased - Do the best you can with what you know, using what you have, in the time allowed.

A grounding perspective for creativity.
I don't usually leave audiobook reviews, but this book is wonderfully moving.
Gilbert's perspective on creative living was what I needed to calm my hectic mind. I found her approach to the creative process and her ongoing dedication to writing provided a reality check for working my way through the creative process. Her stories and guidance on living a creative life helped me reframe my reason for creating while taking the pressure off the outcome of my work.
I highly recommend this audiobook!

It was a gift to be given permission to look at creative process and output in a way uninhibited by crippling pressure. This book changed my perspective and maybe even gave me space not to have to believe everything I read here.
