Story
It was summer in the mountains when five small children vanished from their nursery school picnic. The heat was stifling that day, the tinkle of an ice-cream van in the air.... Three-and-a-half years later, in the dead of winter, the children are returned to their families...one by one. All except for Ivy - the granddaughter of Homicide Detective Kate Wakeland. The other four children say Ivy is dead.

Story
Alex Armstrong has changed everything about herself—her name, her appearance, her backstory. She’s no longer the terrified teenager a rapt audience saw on television, emerging in handcuffs from the quiet suburban home the night her family was massacred. That girl, Alexandra Quinlan, nicknamed Empty Eyes, was accused of the killings, fought to clear her name, and later took the stand during her highly publicized defamation lawsuit that captured the attention of the nation. It’s been ten years since, and Alex hasn’t stopped searching for answers about the night her family was killed.

Publisher's Summary
Two estranged sisters reunite to solve the harrowing mystery of their missing mother.
In 1998, the American Jorgenson family had been on a year-long road trip in Australia. One humid, storming night, the mother - Elsa Jorgenson - vanished in an isolated stretch of Australian everglades. Elsa was never seen again.
That night, twelve-year-old Lily Jorgenson was left alone and terrified in the family camper—even her teenage sister Iris is missing. When Iris comes racing back through the rain, she refuses to tell where she’s been. Lily is certain her sister is hiding a dark secret.
24 years later, Lily is a travel writer living a settled life with her son in Pennsylvania, USA. Lily and Iris are estranged, with Iris’s secret having torn them apart. When floods dredge up their mother’s backpack from the everglades, tantalising clues are uncovered, and the police reopen the cold case.
Lily returns to Australia, determined to force Iris to finally tell her secret, and to do that, she'll have to reunite with her. But when Lily unlocks the gut-wrenching events of the past, she finds that everything she thought was true about her family is about to shatter.
ANNI TAYLOR lives on The Central Coast, north of Sydney, Australia, with her partner and four boys. Her thriller novels include The Game You Played, Stranger in the Woods and Poison Orchids.

A beautifully crafted mystery
I liked the Australian setting. The narrator was exceptional, flowing between characters' voices and Aussie & US accents, adding the nuances of believability and qualities of cliffhanger by the way she told the story. The story has a twisty-turny plot that hinges on secrets I didn't figure out - I like that! Believable characters with clear personalities, each affected differently by the same harrowing experiences. The dialogue between characters was remarkably well-written - too often, I find dialogue distracts from the story because it's not well-written. It must be a challenge for authors. Read & enjoy!

I was so interested in the story from Lily’s perspective. Narrator was excellent! Took a bit of time to unravel but it was worth the wait.

Good listen!
Not your typical murder mystery story which was nice. Really enjoyed being a part of the relationship building the sisters go through. The performer was great! Some get carried away and the voices are over the top. She made it easy to tell the characters apart without doing that.

Great storyline
The storyline was tied together well in the end. I love the pacing of the plot. Just enough detail at the right time and lovely scenic descriptions to break up the suspense and tension and heartbreak. Great book

Great!
Great storyline. A bit unique thankfully from regular mystery books. Author tied things up well at the end. Narration was good. Took getting used to some Australian voices.

Authentic relationships and surprising story line.
The stellar narration gave a certain authenticity and realism to Anni Taylor’s characters that I really liked. The twists and turns were unexpected which I also really like. The only thing which felt little too predictable was the development of a relationship between the detective and Lily (which doesn’t mean I didn’t cheer for that in the end however!)
