I knew diving into Black Knight would be hard, and I wasn’t wrong. Rina Kent takes us on an intense and heart-wrenching journey, exploring dark and heavy themes like depression, eating disorders, and self-harm with a sensitivity that’s raw and beautifully descriptive. If you’re new to her books, please take the time to read all the trigger warnings beforehand—this story is not for the faint of heart.

I’ve been avoiding this book for almost a year because I knew how deeply it would affect me, and it absolutely broke me. I read Black Knight in one day, crying nonstop through the first half. Kimberly’s pain and misery felt so real that I couldn’t help but see myself in the girl with green hair. I stepped into her shoes, and her struggles struck a chord within me.
The plot, however, left me utterly speechless. The twists and revelations were jaw-dropping—I couldn’t believe some of the directions the story took. Despite Xander’s cruel actions and bullying, the layers of his character unraveled to reveal a sweet, broken man. His vulnerability and some of the revelations about his past completely moved me. The chemistry between Kim and Xander is undeniable, filled with tension, passion, and so much heartache.

One of my favorite quotes from Xander encapsulates the depth of his feelings:
“She’s not only my soulmate, my life wouldn’t have existed without her.”

While this is book four in the Royal Elite series, it can be read as a standalone. However, I’d recommend reading the earlier books to fully immerse yourself in this world. Black Knight is a gripping high school bully romance with mature themes and visceral mental health struggles that demand a brave heart to read. It’s a story that stays with you long after you’ve turned the final page.

An Emotional and Jaw-Dropping Journey

In book four we follow Kimberly’s and Xander’s story. They met when they were little and became inseparable after Xander’s mom leaves and never returns. She was his princess and he was her knight. Until one day he pushed her away and refused to talk to her. She was hurt by that situation because he was her safe space especially when her mom was so emotionally abusive. He never stopped loving her and would get extremely jealous whenever any other guy went near her or touched her. Then after a tragic event she learns why he stayed away from her all those years, except he didn’t have the whole story. This book had me gasping and crying and swooning and I can’t get it out of my mind! I rate it 5 stars yet again because Rina Kent is an absolute genius! The narrators make the book even better!

This is the most complex friends to enemies to ***(insert spoiler if you know you know)*** to lovers book I’ve read. This book was deeply emotional and heartbreaking. It was a harsh behind the scenes and into the mind of someone who struggles with ED, depression, and self confidence issues. To be in the head of the character is hard to read. It’s hard to know so many people feel this way and no one knows. The relationship between these two is so twisted and heartbreaking. It was fast paced but still the right timing for all the main points.

This book was so much different than the others. I actually appreciated the shift and realness this book offered. I think that this book should come with more trigger warnings though. Yes the series is dark, but this one is much different.
