Set in 2082, Peter Watts' Blindsight is fast-moving, hard SF that pulls readers into a futuristic world where a mind-bending alien encounter is about to unfold.

After the Firefall, all eyes are locked heavenward as a team of specialists aboard the self-piloted spaceship Theseus hurtles outbound to intercept an unknown intelligence.

Great performance by the narrator. However the story is a mess. I had no idea what is going on most of the time.

Story is too confusing

There’s little potential for a more unreliable narrator than someone who’s had half their brain removed, replaced with circuitry, and then proceeds to question his own humanity and consciousness.

Watt’s grants that grainy perspective of his story world through the eyes of Siri. As the story progresses, so does your emotional distancing from Siri. His self-professed lack of humanity keeps you at arms length, yet him being our guide through the world of the story forces you to stay close.

This is a wonderful, dense and compelling story full of memorable characters and set pieces.

What is consciousness?

It is an interesting sci fi story smothered by technobabble and purple prose. The author really wants you to know he’s the smartest guy in the room.

Author gets in his own way
