About this listen

The highly anticipated inside look at the collapse of the Murdaugh dynasty by the celebrated investigative journalist and creator of the #1 hit Murdaugh Murders Podcast, Mandy Matney.

Years before the name Alex Murdaugh was splashed across every major media outlet in America, local South Carolina journalist Mandy Matney had an instinct that something wasn’t right in the Lowcountry. The powerful Murdaugh dynasty had dominated rural South Carolina for generations. No one dared to cross them.

When Mandy and her reporting partner Liz Farrell looked closer at a fatal boat crash involving the storied family’s teenage son Paul, they began to uncover a web of mysteries surrounding the deaths of the Murdaughs’ long-time housekeeper and a young man found slain years earlier on a backcountry road. Just as their investigations were unfolding, the brutal double murder of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh rocketed Alex Murdaugh onto the international stage.

From the newsroom to the courtroom, to the kitchen-table studio where Mandy recorded her #1 Murdaugh Murders Podcast, Blood on Their Hands is a propulsive true crime saga, an empathetic work of investigative journalism, and an excoriation of the “good old boy” systems that enabled a network of criminals.

authentic behind the scenes look at the toll of investigative reporting for women

Mandy does an excellent job balancing her pride (rightfully earned) and her insecurities while navigating her way through the typically male dominated field of journalism. Her highs become your highs, and her lows resonate with the listener on a deep level. More than a story about Alex Murdaugh, Blood on their Hands is an insightful story of personal growth, the importance of therapy, and escaping toxic habits and people.

Less Mandy more Alex please

I was caught off by how much of this book was about Mandy Matney and her 'rise to fame' subscript, with pleas for credibility and recognition thrown in. By halfway I sensed this was mostly about Mandy, and the Alex Murdaugh case was a prop for her autobiography. By two thirds I knew it and was skipping through parts. If you are looking for the Murdaugh story, it is secondary in here, and I would not recommend it. I will leave you with quote:

"I left David in the car with Luna (the dog), as I went into Judge Newman's courthouse.

Excellent overall endeavour of insight into the corrupt, entitled and dysfunctional, corrupt Murdaugh world.

Very comprehensive and heartfelt. She was immersed in this horrible true crime drama but her need for answers and justice for all of Murdovictims was always at the forefront.

Not quite what I expected

Alternative title for this book: “Listen to me whine about my bosses and hate on men, while I give you the bare bones basics of the crime that this book is supposed to be about”

That being said, I applaud the author for her bravery and tenacity in pursuing what was right. She challenged a very powerful family, right from the beginning, and was relentless in her efforts to get justice for the victims and their families. Well done!

I would have liked to hear much more about the case, and much less autobiographical detail.

It would have been nice to get a heads up on why you were pronouncing his name “Ellick” when it is spelled Alex. I had to google that after a lot of confusion. Note to future listeners; it’s a low-country thing. South Carolina is just different.

A note to the author: Just because someone disagrees with your opinion, doesn’t mean they are doing so because they don’t think women should have one. Maybe they just don’t agree with you. You make a lot of assumptions and seem to usually assume the worst, at least about men. Also, your voice is great. Don’t worry about that.

Excellent!

Excellent behind the scenes look at everything that brought Mandy and friends to the sunlight through
very dark days. Worth the wait and worth the listen. I didn’t want it to end.
