About this listen
Napoleon has been defeated at Waterloo, and the ensuing peace brings with it both the desertion of nearly half of Captain Aubrey's crew and the sudden dimming of Aubrey's career prospects in a peacetime navy. When the Surprise is nearly sunk on her way to South America - where Aubrey and Stephen Maturin are to help Chile assert her independence from Spain - the delay occasioned by repairs reaps a harvest of strange consequences.
The South American expedition is a desperate affair; and in the end Jack's bold initiative to strike at the vastly superior Spanish fleet precipitates a spectacular naval action that will determine both Chile's fate and his own.

Full Series Complete
Well after over 200 hours of listening I have come to the end of what can only be called one of the greatest adventures I have ever been on between the pages of a cover. Aubrey and Maturin are now, to me, as iconic as Holmes and Watson. I am sad this has come to an end but elated over this book especially as a way to “wrap it up” - I will however start over again back at the beginning to rejoin these two amazing characters on their voyages abroad. Do yourself a favour and get started - you will never regret it. And of course the narrator Ric Jerrom, without whom the novels would never have been half as good to listen to - I am officially spoiled. 10/10 and then some for this final novel.

Once more through the cannon
O'Brian's 20th and last published novel in the series leaves me with a great satisfaction. Jack has his pennant, Steven had another political victory, and the dear Surprise has served another mission admirably. I shall miss them all for a time, then perhaps one day I'll open Master and Commander again and begin another circumnavigation.
