About this listen

Kelli MacCabe is a no-nonsense detective with a tough exterior. Only a select few know her as a loyal, loving friend. Committed to her family, her friends, and her job, Kelli puts her needs behind everyone else's.

As a surgeon, Nora Whitmore is used to being in control. The hospital is her life and leaves room for little else. Respected by her colleagues, but misunderstood by the residents, Nora takes what she needs and keeps everyone at arm's length. In the process, she creates unexpected enemies.

Tragedy brings them together. As chaos grows around them, the lines between them begin to blur. Despite being from different worlds, friendship grows between them, turning quickly to attraction. Will these two strong, independent women find a way to deal with their individual baggage? Or will they be overcome by it?

Love mature characters. Love drama. Do not like characters that are hiding their sexual.

Story had mature characters. Loved that all lesbians were out, no one is confused. Enjoyed story. “Did I say I like mature characters?”

unlikable characters

I tried to like the characters. I really tried. But alas, both women were unbearable. I'm all for the 'strong and sexy' type of women but these girls just seemed mean and rude. I found it hard to connect to their story and was bored of their struggles.

disjointed

I don't know why this book had so many good reviews on goodreads nor why it seems like a reasonably popular series in lesfic reading communities. Swearing and smirking isn't a personality nor is pushing people's boundaries, which means Kelli barely has one. Nora seemed hollow at first, but I started liking her more and more as the book progressed; she's the only reason I didn't give this book one of my rare 1 star reviews. And given they're by far the most developed characters in the book, you can imagine how two-dimensional I find the rest of them.

Besides my issue with characters, the scene transitions are done badly enough it's jolting. I get the feeling that's because this started as a fanfic and was not adequately edited to feel like a book.

This is the first book I have regretted using a credit on. I might try book 2 at some point because it's free and the narrator is switched to the great Abby Craden to see if the writing improves, but the reviews don't leave me hopeful it will and I'm not sure free is enough motivation for me to give it a chance.

A struggle to listen to

I really tried to get through this one, the concept of the story was compelling. I am by no means against swearing and profanity, but all the f bombs were over used, out of context and unnecessary. The characters talked like bored, uneducated teenagers, not doctors and cops. Too many cringe moments for me to finish the book.
