About this listen
Who better to face the greatest evil of the 20th century than a humble man of faith?
As Adolf Hitler and the Nazis seduced a nation, bullied a continent, and attempted to exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside. One of these was Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and author.
In this New York Times bestselling biography, Eric Metaxas takes both strands of Bonhoeffer's life—the theologian and the spy—and draws them together to tell a searing story of incredible moral courage in the face of monstrous evil.
In Bonhoeffer, Metaxas presents the fullest account of Bonhoeffer's life, including his:
- heart-wrenching decision to leave the safe haven of America to return to Hitler's Germany
- involvement in the famous Valkyrie plot and in "Operation 7," the effort to smuggle Jews into neutral Switzerland
- lifelong dedication to sharing the tenets of his faith
This edition, revised and with a new introduction from the author, shares the deeply moving story through previously unavailable documents, including personal letters, detailed journal entries, and firsthand personal accounts to reveal never-before-seen dimensions of Bonhoeffer's life and work.
Praise for Bonhoeffer:
"Metaxas has created a biography of uncommon power--intelligent, moving, well researched, vividly written, and rich in implication for our own lives. Or to put it another way: Buy this book. Read it. Then buy another copy and give it to a person you love. It's that good." --Archbishop Charles Chaput, author, First Things
"Metaxas tells Bonhoeffer's story with passion and theological sophistication." —Wall Street Journal
"Metaxas presents Bonhoeffer as a clear-headed, deeply convicted Christian who submitted to no one and nothing except God and his Word." --Christianity Today
"Metaxas has written a book that adds a new dimension to World War II, a new understanding of how evil can seize the soul of a nation and a man of faith can confront it." --Thomas Fleming, author, The New Dealers’ War

Turning the other cheek does not mean standing by while the enemies of God dismantle Christian civilization and brainwash our children. Decrying the cowardice that masquerades as meekness, Eric Metaxas summons the Church to battle. An attenuated and unbiblical “faith” based on what Bonhoeffer called “cheap grace” has sapped the spiritual vitality of millions of Americans. Paying lip service to an insipid “evangelism,” they shrink from combating the evils of our time. Metaxas refutes the pernicious lie that fighting evil politicizes Christianity.

Amazing Grace tells the story of the remarkable life of the British abolitionist William Wilberforce (1759-1833). This accessible biography chronicles Wilberforce's extraordinary role as a human rights activist, cultural reformer, and member of Parliament. At the center of this heroic life was a passionate 20-year fight to abolish the British slave trade, a battle Wilberforce won in 1807, as well as efforts to abolish slavery itself in the British colonies.

What can the call to discipleship, the adherence to the word of Jesus, mean today to the businessman, the soldier, the laborer, or the aristocrat? What did Jesus mean to say to us? What is his will for us today? Drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, Dietrich Bonhoeffer answers these timeless questions by providing a seminal reading of the dichotomy between "cheap grace" and "costly grace."

The dramatic autobiography of one of China's dedicated, courageous, and intensely persecuted house church leaders. This is the gripping story of how God took a young, half-starved boy from a poor village in Henan province and placed him on the front line for Jesus, in the face of impossible odds. Instead of focusing on the many miracles or experiences of suffering, however, Yun prefers to focus on the character and beauty of Jesus.

At one time, Corrie ten Boom would have laughed at the idea that she had a story to tell. For the first 50 years of her life, nothing out of the ordinary ever happened to her. Their uneventful days, as regulated as their own watches, revolved around their abiding love for one another. But with the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland, everything changed....

Thorough but Engaging Telling of Bonhoeffer’s Life
This was my first time reading about Bonhoeffer. It’s a really interesting read about this fascinating man and his life, I’d recommend it if you’re interested in him. The book does a great job of giving enough context about the current events of Germany and the Nazis to help understand the importance of the situation Bonhoeffer and his friends and family faced.

A Notable Record of History from a Christian Perspective
This is an exhaustive, complete and conscientious work. It is a treasure of Scripture, thought and insights into Bonhoeffer’s life that impact even my own simple life. It does however, speak volumes to the days we are now in where we are repeatedly threatened by the globalist’s agendas that are being implemented by our own leaders of our own countries. These are days where moment by moment our freedoms are being lost and many of our inner conflicts and questions regarding Christian actions to be taken to salvage our own national homes are at play in our minds. May God help and move us to action, to true spiritual lives, to see His face and be His representation in these days of opportunity like no other. Thank you, Eric, for this honest and true record of Bonhoeffer’s life.

Historical gold
I couldn’t stop listening. This is a detailed & profoundly deep and personal account of a hero of the faith. Stories like this need to be told lest we repeat the mistakes that were made during this sad time in history. Bonhoeffer was a prophet to his people who didn’t have ears to hear then, is he a prophet to us now ? Do we have ears to hear any more than 1930’s Germany did. I don ‘t know any one who shouldn’t read this book. I can absolutely understand why Eric Metaxas felt so urgent to write Letter to the American Church after working on Bonhoeffer’s biography. For those with ears to hear.
