Disability Justice Suspense

This is different from Freida Mcfadden's usual MO but in a good way. Usually her books are driven by plot and an unexpected twist, which is great, but her character development isn't that strong (although not always) and there isn't really a bigger meaning or idea in the story. It's just a good, psychological story. But in this book, the twist is pretty predictable, but it's OK because that's not the point. The strength lies in the perspective and how the author makes you feel the horror of being completely dependent on an abusive man as a disabled woman and the embodied struggles of recovering from a traumatic brain injury. She plays with themes of memory and identity, disability justice, and domestic abuse and you feel deeply connected to the main character, even though she's disconnected from herself. The book is also excellently narrated. I was pleasantly surprised and would definitely recommend this novel.

One of her best yet …

Best book so far and I’ve listened to every other book. It may be because my younger sister was in a car accident and has brain damage and no use of her left body. I cried a lot because I’ve been going through the process with my own sister and my family. Great listen !

Slow but liked the ending

Have read a bunch of books by Freida and this one is slower than the others. A lot of time spent at the rehab hospital talking about recovery which isn’t very thrilling…
However, I did like the ending!

Not one of her best

Predicable. It is slow then ends quickly. Not my favourite of this authors. No real twist!

ANOTHER FANTASTIC BOOK BY FREIDA MCFADDEN!!

I bought the paper back, but I had extra credits on audible so purchased the audio book as well for jogging and driving. I loved the narrator’s performance so much that I actually would read the book while listening to the Audible version so that we could “read” together. The narration was absolutely perfect, her voice was so nice and she did a brilliant job with every single character. Most of them sounded like a totally different person. So thank you narrator you were just fabulous! Here’s my review on the book:

OK I am officially a super fan of Freida McFadden’s!! I LOOOOOOVE this author soooooo much!! I first read The Housemaid which blew me away and now this book which was just as fantastic!! How does she have all these amazing story lines living in her head??? And her sense of humour is exactly like mine, she just totally cracks me up with all her funny comments and scenarios. 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣 All of her strange storylines and funny scenes are right up my alley, it’s like this author was born just to entertain me haha.

About the characters, I felt so sorry for Charly during her recovery and hated her husband with a passion. I was a little bit annoyed how Charly was kind of dumb and gullible and a total push-over when it came to her evil husband (I found myself shouting at the book, Charly, how can you be so stupid??? But besides that, everything else was just absolutely perfect. Please never stop writing Freida. And by the way, I have not read the same author back to back for about five years I’d say??? But tomorrow I’m starting my third in a row Freida McFadden book: The Surrogate Mother.

Please everyone do yourself a favour and read one of her books. ❤️ 📚

Love this Author, not this book.

This is the 7th book that I have read by Freida McFadden. I loved her stand alone psychological thriller’s. Even though this series was not labeled as a psychological thriller, (being in the healthcare field), I assumed I would love this series as well.
I didn’t mind Dead Med, the first book of this series, was a good book, even if it wasn’t what I was used to from McFadden. It at least had me unable to predict the book, as the rest of hers had till this point. (My favourite thing about this authors books)…
And now for “Brain Damaged”
It was SO SLOW …. I only kept listening because I had liked so much of her previous work, I kept telling myself I’d was just a very elaborate set up for the story… but it wasn’t, it was the story. And the time line, it was SO hard to follow, it wasn’t till more then half way thru the book that I realized “6 months after”, meant after from the original event, not the last event. The time line had me questioning the timing- constantly, and me revisit some of my assumptions- I spent more time trying to figure that out, then enjoying the book.
And the worst part… I predicted every chapter- right from the beginning- it was SO PREDICTABLE.
I kept waiting for the big twist at the end.. there wasn’t one- sigh, I am returning this book, and going back to her catalogue to find another stand alone thriller… if you want a book to read/ listen to, listen to “DO NOT DISTURB”, by Freida McFadden!

Worst book by Freida McFadden!

This is my third book by Freida McFadden and it is nothing like the first two, which were fast paced and fantastic to listen to. Too much time is spent in the rehab hospital so that it is incredibly slow and boring. I could not wait to get through this tedious book!
