About this listen

Golden Globe-winning actor Michael C. Hall (Six Feet Under) performs Truman Capote's provocative, naturalistic masterstroke about a young writer's charmed fascination with his unorthodox neighbor, the "American geisha" Holly Golightly. Holly - a World War II-era society girl in her late teens - survives via socialization, attending parties and restaurants with men from the wealthy upper class who also provide her with money and expensive gifts. Over the course of the novella, the seemingly shallow Holly slowly opens up to the curious protagonist, who eventually gets tossed away as her deepening character emerges.

Breakfast at Tiffany's, Truman Capote's most beloved work of fiction, introduced an independent and complex character who challenged audiences, revived Audrey Hepburn's flagging career in the 1961 film version, and whose name and style has remained in the national idiom since publication. Hall uses his diligent attention to character to bring our unnamed narrator’s emotional vulnerability to the forefront of this American classic.

What the critics say

"[Michael C. Hall] uses his diligent attention to character to bring our unnamed narrator's emotional vulnerability to the forefront of this American classic.... I felt content and comfortable in Hall's hands as the tale unfolded. He did a wonderful job giving each character voice, especially that of Holly." (Caffeinated Book Reviewer)

quick 'read'

Yep, this book was great, classic Capote - I spent the entire 2 hours and 50 minutes thinking that the book was narrated by Anthony Michael Hall (The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, etc.) narrated this book. By the end, I realized it was in fact Michael C. Hall (Dexter, SFU). Regardless, the narration was great (voices, accents) - good job, Anthony Michael C. Hall!

Not what I expected

Hard to listen to. Very sad. I saw the movie many years ago. I think I need to watch it again.

Brilliant narration

I’ve seen the movie years ago, and really enjoyed the book as well. Michael C Hall did an absolutely brilliant job narrating the story, and made it very engaging. A very pleasurable afternoon spent listening to this.

Slow intro but you’ll quickly become invested

Took a minute to get into so I turned up to 1.5 speed and within a few minutes I was back at regular because I had started to enjoy the characters especially holly and the voice actor was convincing and playful enough to keep me drawn in also it’s a classic I’ve only heard referenced and this was a good way to absorb it.

A beautiful work of art

A tour de force that you owe it to yourself to read (or listen to). Short and sweet and just enough to make you smile through tears.

Delightful

I usually like to read my books. This was the first audiobook I listened to and was pleasantly surprised. The narrator did an excellent job! He has a very soothing yet engaging voice that I could listen to for hours. I also liked the different voices he did for the novel's characters (Mag especially was awesomely rendered).

Good performance. Great Novella

I’m a fan of the movie, and had never read the novella. It’s a classic for a reason! Very entertaining.

I liked it
It’s well written, he unfolds the story in a way a movie can’t convey.
Its read in good pace, timing, voice distinction
