About this listen
David Farland delivers the second in his high fantasy Runelords series, featuring a complex system of magic and a wondrous, expertly realized world.
Raj Ahten, ruler of Indhopal, has used enough forcibles to transform himself into the ultimate warrior: the Sum of All Men. Ahten seeks to bring all of humanity under his rule, destroying anyone in his path. But young Prince Gaborn has fulfilled a 2000-year-old prophecy and become the Earth King, a mythic figure who can unleash the forces of the Earth itself. He has managed to drive off Raj Ahten, but Ahten is far from defeated.
Striking at far-flung cities and fortresses, Ahten seeks to draw out the Earth King from his seat of power and to crush him. But as they weaken each other's forces in battle, the armies of an ancient and implacable inhuman enemy issue forth from the very bowels of the Earth.

Really enjoyed this one
Second books of many series’s end up losing some of the magic of the first book, not so with this one, it picks up right where the last book left off. Such a good story!

Good story, satisfying listen
David Farland appears to have mastered how to write series so that each volume tells a complete and compelling story without leaving the reader hanging by their fingernails in exasperation at the end of the book. There is of course the over-arching story that provides a real incentive to read the next installment of the series, but the books I've read so far are satisfying standalone stories. Think of it like reading about a major battle campaign in WWII without reading about the entire war's conclusion. You may still want to read follow up volumes to the conclusion of V-Day, but you don't feel like you must read the next battle campaign to have the current story completed.
I really enjoy Farland's magic system. In the world of fantasy where so much is derivative and repetitive, his Runelord magic system is unique. And it works.
The reason I'm not giving the book a 5 star review is that there are other books that I think do outshine it, like LOTR by Tolkien. But it is a worthy and entertaining series.

Even better than the first!
Sometimes the 'rules' of the world can get a bit thick - but hang in there. I don't completely understand it all at first but they all become clear and seem natural as the story progresses.
I LOVE the strong women from the first book, and am thrilled to see them getting stronger and driving the plot along with the men in this series - seems that can be a big ask for epic fantasy series in general, but this story does a bang up job.

Great story, even greater narration!
This is a really fun series so far, made 100x better by the Great Ray Porter. I have thoroughly enjoyed the first 2 books and am about to dive straight into book 3 right now.
Can't complain about the price either....

Not as good as book 1
I enjoyed book 1 but this second book makes you hate all the characters, they become whiny and don't act the same as book 1.
It was a struggle to finish and I found myself routing for the villains because I ended up disliking all Major characters, that and the ending is lame.

So so slooooow….
Still not sure how I feel about this piece. The story is interesting enough to try book 3, see if it gets better. Helps that the narrator is my favorite. Not sure if I could’ve gone through these books if it wasn’t for his voice which I simply adore. Having said that, I wouldn’t spend full price or credit on this series.
Read it at min 1.1x, anything slower is unbearable.
