Charlie Goodnight hates being charged a toll on every head of cattle he drives over Raton Pass, so he hires Roy Scuggins, a famed scout, trapper, guide, and explorer, to find a way around Raton Pass.

Roy is settled down with his wife's family, building a new breed of horse. Tragedy results in the loss of the prize stud that the Jakes family brought from back east.
