About this listen
When a young man chooses a forbidden calling, he must prove his worth...or watch his kingdom fall.
Sixteen-year-old Augum Stone is a warlock prodigy suffocating under the weight of expectations. Students idolize him. Nobles plot to exploit him. Commoners think he's a miracle-maker. And with invasion looming, his already war-weakened kingdom expects him to be its champion. But Augum doesn't want to be a pawn in someone else's game. He'll forge his own path: that of the Arcaner - not a warlock or a knight, but a lethal combination of both.
Legend says Arcaners once had the power to summon dragons. If true, it could change everything. Resurrecting the Arcaner path comes with consequences, however. Scandal. Malice. Treachery. And a harrowing test of character. He must survive. He must prove he's worthy of an ancient path. And he must save the kingdom...before it's too late.

Not quite as good as the originals, but still a great start to a sequel series
The Arcane series was so good, that the sequel series first book didn’t seem as great. Not to say it wasn’t a good book, but I guess I had expected more.
The narrator had done a great job and took effort to bring life to the story, however, because of the change in narrator, a lot of the words in the book had been pronounced differently. This had slowly bothered me more and more through the book. I recommend keeping with one narrator through any future books that are written by this author. I am none the less a huge fan, and it was definitely worth the read. :)

Instant confusion
I’ll never know if this book is phenomenal or if I would’ve liked it because I didn’t make it past the first few chapters. Have you ever started reading a book and instantly felt lost or thought did I possibly download the wrong book in a series? That’s exactly how I felt! I’m not sure if this book is a spin off from another series but I think that should’ve been mentioned somewhere in the synopsis because instantly you’re thrown into a world that seems to be in the midst of chaos but you have no idea what the heck happened and the few chapters I read didn’t do anything to aid in figuring out what was happening or what had happened. It seems this book started in the aftermath of a big series of events so it leaves you feeling lost almost instantly and it left me thinking why would I bother reading to get further lost so regardless of the fact that at this point the narration was good, the narration wasn’t good enough to make me want to spend over 14 hours in confusion.
