Publisher's Summary

In this first in a series of wickedly funny mysteries, best-selling author Lawrence Block introduces Bernie Rhodenbarr, sometimes burglar, sometimes sleuth. Pulling only an occasional, very discreet job, Bernie manages to maintain his comfortable New York City apartment and keep his unorthodox vocation a closely-guarded secret. Every burglar knows never to trust anonymous phone calls. But when the caller offers easy money for an hour's work, Bernie can't ignore the job. All he has to do is find a blue box in an empty apartment. But the valuable box is nowhere to be found. The occupant is, however - and he's dead. Suddenly Bernie finds himself the object of a massive man hunt, wanted for both theft and murder. Winner of multiple Edgar and Shamus Awards, Lawrence Block crafts clever plots with characters you wish you could have over for drinks. But stop to count the silver afterwards. You'll find yourself laughing out loud as gravelly-voiced narrator Richard Ferrone brings sticky-fingered Bernie to life.

The original Bernie Bro

The Bernie the burglar books are a bona fide delight; Lawrence Block is a master, & Ferrone’s voice is perfect.

Passable Lighthearted- If Not Always G-Rated- Mystery

This Lawrence Block offering - the first in the 'Bernie Rhodenbarr' series - introduces us to a smart-Alek ne'er do-well petty criminal sent on the run after being framed for murder. He soon teams up with a couple of conveniently helpful (and willingly seduced) "dames" to uncover the real killer before the police can capture him.
The plot is uncomplicated and doesn't take itself very seriously - don't expect anything weighty or thought-provoking - but the vocabulary/prose is capable and the pacing is fast enough to keep the pages turning.

A quality performance from Richard Ferrone helps with the quality of the book, too. His voice-acting is fairly weak at times, but his diction, cadence, and tonality are commendable.. and his gravelly baritone timbre is the best feature of the entire recording.

In toto, the audiobook rates 6 stars out of 10. I personally won't be continuing with the series.. but almost every book in the thing is available on this platform for free - it's not crazy to give Episode 1 a try and see if the style grabs you.
As to this first installment: 'Burglars Can't Be Choosers' is worth your time as a 'Plus' option.. but unlikely to merit a Credit should Audible ask for one.
