Publisher's Summary

The first book in a brand-new thriller series by the Queen of Crime Drama, Lynda La Plante. A burnt-out cottage, a fortune buried in the ashes - and a body that could solve a decades-old crime....

Jack Warr is a young DC with the Metropolitan Police. Charming but aimless, Jack can't seem to find his place in the world - until he's drawn into an investigation that turns his life upside down.

In the aftermath of a fire at a derelict cottage, a badly charred body is discovered, along with the burnt remnants of millions of stolen, untraceable bank notes - the hidden legacy of Dolly Rawlins and her gang of Widows.

Jack's assignment to the case coincides with an investigation into his own past. As he searches for the truth about his identity, Jack finds himself increasingly drawn into a murky underworld of corruption and crime. Those millions have not been forgotten - and Jack will stop at nothing to find the truth.

An exciting and action packed new thriller, with roots in La Plante's best-selling novels, Widows, Widows' Revenge and She's Out.

loved the book, it had a good story line to it. I enjoyed listening to it and following along with the book. English reading is starting to get to me. in a good way.

Uncommonly Well-balanced

I have read a number of Procedural/Mystery-Thrillers with multiple investigations in parallel - with variable success (some seamless and some quite klunky/forced). This offering from Lynda La Plante introduces a conflicted but likable London Metropolitan Police DC: Jack Warr. He investigates a complicated unsolved £27 Million Train Robbery from the 1990s and simultaneously searches for his mysterious biological father. The vocabulary/prose is creditable, the characters are 3-dimensional & realistic, and the plotlines are captivating and given equal significance (albeit not involving the most interesting crimes I have encountered).

The decision to employ two narrators is somewhat odd, however. Both Alex Hassell (reading the majority of the novel) and Annie Aldington (reading flashbacks among the heist participants) are professional.. but both are also unspectacular. Diction, timbre, cadence, and tone are commendable, but coupled with hit & miss voice-acting (and different interpretations of the same character). Hassell could easily have handled Addington's parts with a similar result. Overall, I would rate the performances "average".

Taken altogether, I am impressed with La Plante's storytelling skills. 'Buried' rates a decent 7.5 stars out of 10. I am grateful to Audible for including the title in the 'Plus' catalogue - I probably wouldn't have tried it otherwise - and it's good enough to prompt me to keep an eye out for future episodes in the 'Jack Warr' series.
