About this listen
CIVIL: Life After the Foreign Legion is the author's follow-up to Appel: A Canadian in the French Foreign Legion. During his recent return to France, he shares with you his past in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Algeria as a security contractor and more.
"The authors honest depictions of the chaotic blend of high-octane danger, exposed tensions and constant improvisation that characterized the period of reconstruction in war-torn Iraq, immediately paint the picture.... Those years of deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan seem a world away now but life was lived in a different ‘lane’ then, where death and destruction stalked your every hour. Joel brings this time into sharp focus, he cuts through the embellished, the fabricated and self-aggrandizement of so many accounts and captures the complex reality that existed." (From the foreword by Caroline Ruart, ArmorGroup, former head of operations and support)

A great follow on to his first book.
An enjoyable follow on to his first book. Well worth a listen. Enjoyable to hear the book in the author's own voice.

An Honest Narrative on a Hard Fought Life
An excellent follow up to the author’s first work Appel, that gives an inside take on the world of working as a security contractor in the tumultuous security environment of the 2000s. The book does well to illustrate the strain of the work and life on the author, and his family, told with humility and objectivity. This isn’t a “this is why I’m a big deal” war story, it’s an honest narrative from a hard fought life.

Great listen...
Great book, and a great listen read by the author. One of the issues with books like this when a hired narrator is used, is they frequently mispronounce the names and places etc... Here we have the author reading their own book, so the work flows and the typical errors in pronouncing names and locations etc... are not present. I highly recommend the book if you are looking for some insight into life as a contractor in this time period in these regions of the world.

Worthy follow up to Appel
I was interested in the subject matter namely overseas security and first person narrative of conflict zones. Joel offers insight into that world. I strongly suggest reading Appel first.
