About this listen
From trauma educator and somatic guide Kimberly Ann Johnson comes a cutting-edge guide for tapping into the wisdom and resilience of the body to rewire the nervous system, heal from trauma, and live fully.
In an increasingly polarized world where trauma is often publicly renegotiated, our nervous systems are on high alert. From skyrocketing rates of depression and anxiety to physical illnesses such as autoimmune diseases and digestive disorders, many women today find themselves living out of alignment with their bodies.
Kimberly Johnson is a somatic practitioner, birth doula, and postpartum educator who specializes in helping women recover from all forms of trauma. In her work, she’s seen the same themes play out time and again. In a culture that prioritizes executive function and “mind over matter", many women are suffering from deeply unresolved pain that causes mental and physical stagnation and illness.
In Call of the Wild, Johnson offers an eye-opening look at this epidemic as well as an informative view of the human nervous system and how it responds to difficult events. From the “small t” traumas of getting ghosted, experiencing a fall-out with a close friend, or swerving to avoid a car accident to the “capital T” traumas of sexual assault, an upending natural disaster, or a life-threatening illness - Johnson explains how the nervous system both protects us from immediate harm and creates reverberations that ripple through a lifetime.
In this practical, empowering guide, Johnson shows readers how to metabolize these nervous system responses, allowing everyone to come home to their deepest, most intuitive and whole selves. Following her supportive advice, readers will learn how to move from wholeness, tapping into the innate wisdom of their senses, soothing frayed nerves and reconnecting with their “animal selves".
While we cannot cure the painful cultural rifts inflicting our society, there is a path forward - through our bodies.

Story
Anxiety affects more than forty million Americans—a number that continues to climb in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. While conventional medicine tends to view anxiety as a “neck-up” problem—that is, one of brain chemistry and psychology—the truth is that the origins of anxiety are rooted in the body. In The Anatomy of Anxiety, holistic psychiatrist Dr. Ellen Vora offers nothing less than a paradigm shift in our understanding of anxiety and mental health, suggesting that anxiety is not simply a brain disorder but a whole-body condition.

Story
Why do women keep themselves small and quiet? Why do they hold back professionally and personally? What fuels the uncertainty and lack of confidence so many women often feel? In this paradigm-shifting book, leading feminist thinker Bethany Webster identifies the source of women’s trauma. She calls it the Mother Wound - the systemic disenfranchisement of women by the patriarchy - and reveals how this cycle is perpetuated by wounded mothers who unconsciously pass on damaging beliefs and behaviors to their daughters.

In Take Back the Magic: Conversations with the Unseen World, author, spiritual teacher, and co-founder of The Way of the Rose Perdita Finn reveals that life is beginningless, love is endless, and those who have passed don’t truly go anywhere when they die.

The menstrual cycle is a vital and vitalizing system in the female body, and yet our understanding of and respect for this process is both limited and distorted. Few women really know about the physiology of their cycle, and many do not see it as an integral part of their health and well-being, let alone as a potential guide to emotional and spiritual literacy.

Story
Many of the clients who end up in our respective therapist offices thought they were doing relationships right—avoiding the white picket fence, focusing on careers and experiences over babies and legally-binding documents, choosing someone after they “found themselves” first. However, like clockwork, around their early to mid-thirties, these clients show up at our door. Why? For the first time, they realize that they dislike their relationship and are frustrated by their partner but know that another break-up won’t fix things.

Story
Before a vision of a mysterious "Lady" invited Clark Strand and Perdita Finn to pray the rosary, they were not only uninterested in becoming Catholic but finished with institutional religion altogether. Their main spiritual concerns were the fate of the planet and the future of their children and grandchildren in an age of ecological collapse. But this Lady barely even referred to the Church and its proscriptions. Instead, she spoke of the miraculous power of the rosary to transform lives and heal the planet, and revealed the secrets within the rosary’s prayers and mysteries.

Life Changing
After listening to this, I had to buy the physical book as well because I have so many notes to take and want to read it slowly and give myself more time to digest some of the material. A lot of information here ties in well with other research on complex-trauma and gives a different perspective at the same time. Amazing work!! Easy to digest but also thought-provoking and insightful.

Emerging out of Fauning
I just listened to this book while wrap napping my almost 5 month old son (my first, we freebirthed in our condo) out in the early mornings of end of summer amidst large trees, by big water. It’s been about two weeks of listening to bits a pieces while he slept on my chest each day.
I feel that the all levels transformation of becoming a mother primed me to be ready to integrate a new way of being into my system. I’ve been taking steps towards metabolizing some sexual trauma for many years, and been aware of polyvegal theory and attachment styles etc., but the pathway still felt loose or scattered to me.
Something about the way you layered it all in, segment by segment, and being able to listen to a voice I know + practice the guided activities in real time, really clinched some things together for me. I immediately experienced profound releases doing the activities around some old stuff, and have found the framework of TIMES and tracking my system immediately beneficial as well.
I am stepping out of fauning, a loop I have been stuck in since high school, and it feels so good.
This book provides a method to bring yourself into greater coherence in a really beautifully accessible way, while also emphasizing our need, of course, for each other in the greater culture.
If you are a woman alive in the modern world today, read this book! And find power in the tending to your wounds.
Thank you so much.

Very empowering!
This audiobook is geared towards women; I was told to just listen to it by my therapist. I was able to take some of the knowledge and apply it to my real life. I face unprocessed trauma on a daily basis. This audiobook helped me calm down and feel better. I recommend this book to both men and women.
