About this listen

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Escape to Camino Island, where bookseller Bruce Cable and novelist Mercer Mann always manage to find trouble in paradise.

Mercer Mann, a popular writer from Camino Island, is back on the beach, marrying her boyfriend, Thomas, in a seaside ceremony. Bruce Cable, infamous owner of Bay Books, performs the wedding. Afterward, Bruce tells Mercer that he has stumbled upon an incredible story. Mercer desperately needs an idea for her next novel, and Bruce now has one.

The true story is about Dark Isle, a sliver of a barrier island not far off the North Florida coast. It was settled by freed slaves three hundred years ago, and their descendants lived there until 1955, when the last one was forced to leave. That last descendant is Lovely Jackson, elderly now, who loves her birthplace and its remarkable history. But now Tidal Breeze, a huge, ruthless corporate developer, wants to build a resort and casino on the island, which Lovely knows, deep down, is rightfully hers.

Mercer befriends Lovely, and they plunge into an enormous fight over who owns Dark Isle, taking on Tidal Breeze Corporation, its lawyers, lobbyists, and powerful Florida politicians. But Lovely knows something about the island that could seriously cloud the dollar signs in the developer’s eyes: the island is cursed. It has remained uninhabited for nearly a century for some very real and very troubling reasons. The deep secrets of the past are about to collide with the enormous ambitions of the present, and the fate of Dark Isle—and Camino Island, too—hangs in the balance.

What the critics say

“Light-hearted . . . The Camino books have felt like palate cleansers for Grisham, something fun to do before tackling the weightier issues that usually form the backbone of books such as The Client. . . . Grisham makes sure the book moves like the winds that buffet his fictional island.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune

Would have given it 41\2 stars

Narration was really good, Whooping Goldberg was a great choice for the narration of this book.
I enjoyed getting into this story we already know from the 2 previous books.
The historical component was very interesting.
Worth a credit!

Very good story!

Thoroughly enjoyed the story, but I found knowing the narrator’s voice as someone famous, distracted me from the story so much I almost could not listen to it. I missed the regular reader.

Nearly perfect!

I adored the first Camino Island book and tolerated the second. I found this book similar to the first in quality, it had a little bit of everything, courtroom scenes, an ancient curse, and backstories that will break your heart because they are all too real. Having Whoopi Goldberg as the narrator was a lovely surprise. I believe she did the characters justice and did an excellent job.

Whoopi Goldberg is a great storyteller

I loved everything about this book. It’s the third and a series and I hope there’s a number four. John Grisham is amazing. The storyline was wonderful and so are the characters. What a great plot at the end of it. You just say what a wonderful book.

Compelling story, that could easily be considered true.

Story was amazing. Goldberg struggles with some of the grammar at times, but overall did a good performance.

Great book terrible reader

The book itself is great. However the reader Whoopi Goldberg is terrible. There were issues like, stumbling on words, awkward pauses etc. This takes away from the story. Let the professional audio book people do the reading.

Unfortunate narration

Whoopie Goldberg is a talented woman. She is a terrible narrator however. Southern charm cannot be accessed via a New York accent and at times I couldn’t differentiate which character was supposed to be speaking. It is in places stilted and terribly paced. Overall a disappointing third novel.

Detailed horrific history of slavery.

Overly detailed horrific history of slavery. I couldn’t keep listening. Not at what I expected from a Grisham novel. The reading includes some odd shifting accents that were distracting.
