Publisher's Summary

Here is Steinbeck’s tough yet charming portrait of people on the margins of society, dependent on one another for both physical and emotional survival.

Published in 1945, Cannery Row focuses on the acceptance of life as it is: both the exuberance of community and the loneliness of the individual. Drawing on his memories of the real inhabitants of Monterey, California, Steinbeck interweaves the stories of Doc, Henri, Mack and his boys, and the other characters in this world, where only the fittest survive, to create a novel that is at once one of his most humorous and most poignant works.

Cannery Row comes alive

This excellent reading brings the whole world of Cannery Row to life - characters are perfectly distinct without being all “voicy” (if that makes any sense).

Great

I remember this book, or perhaps it was the movie, from long ago, but the details had faded. I appreciated the audiobook version, very good narration. Great character development, to paint the good intent behind the actions of the protagonists, who might otherwise be written off, given how things always went wrong. Real people, of the time, not shrouded in romance. Steinbeck is a genius.

I aspire to be Doc, but every day I get closer to being like Mac..

Steinbeck is a master of his craft. Like most of his works, this one starts slow but you will be glad to have started reading. Humor, drama, and a dose of philosophy, I recommend this to everyone and especially those who have had the pleasure of visiting Cannery Row these days.
