About this listen

It is 1941 and Captain Antonio Corelli, a young Italian officer, is posted to the Greek island of Cephallonia as part of the occupying forces. At first he is ostracised by the locals, but as a conscientious soldier, whose main aim is to have a peaceful war, he proves in time to be civilised, humorous - and a consummate musician. When the local doctor's daughter's letters to her fiancé go unanswered, the working of the eternal triangle seems inevitable. But can this fragile love survive as the war gets closer and the lines are drawn between invader and defender?

Wonderfully, beautiful story... perfect from beginning to end

This book, while being long and covering so much of history is an amazing account of the tragedies of Greece as well as the rest of the world during WW2 (as well as before and after). It does not shy away from the atrocities of war and doesn’t downplay the sheer horrors of what happened. The writing is amazing. I found myself crying from the pure lack of humanity the author captured and laughing right after by the characters de Bernieres created that show how human strength can survive in horrible times. This is a wonderful piece of writing I won’t soon forget and will be contemplating for a long time.

Struggled with this one

While it's undeniable that de Bernieres is a literary giant, and I'm clearly the minority, I have to admit that I struggled to get through this one.
