Publisher's Summary

Book 2 of the Ciaphas Cain series.

When Commissar Ciaphas Cain and his regiment of Valhallan Guardsmen are deployed to the ice world of Simia Orichalcae, his expectation of an uneventful tour of duty is suddenly interrupted.

Listen to it because:

While his Valhallan regiment are happy on an ice world, Cain's biggest concern is freezing to death...until orks start attacking, and then an ancient threat emerges from the depths. Stuck between two enemies, Cain needs to stop playing the hero and actually be one.

The story:

On the ice world of Simia Orichalcae a spate of mysterious disappearances is causing unrest amongst the mine workers, and, as senior officer of the Astra Militarum, Commissar Ciaphas Cain is nominated to investigate. Unbeknownst to him, the planet is right in the path of a major ork incursion, and, as the savage greenskins attack, a malevolent evil begins to stir deep in the ice caves.

Written by Sandy Mitchell. Narrated by Stephen Perring, Penelope Rawlins and Emma Gregory.

Beautiful

I audibly gasped in joy when I noticed the second Ciaphas Cain novel had been tackled, and by the same perfect team as before. In my mind these characters will only ever sound as they do in these audio books from now on.

Accept no substitute, these folks are wonderful.

Oh also yeah, it’s a Ciaphas Cain novel, buy it nerd!

Quite enjoyable!

The story is a great example of those old style action adventure comics. Don’t look for anything deep and introspective, just enjoy the ride.

Solid, but not the WOW factor of book 1

This wasn't as outstanding as book one for me. The performance is great once again, and the story's not bad. No new memorable characters or moments though, and it gets a bit tiring when Cain constantly prattles on about his selfish nature. We get it, he's a competent coward who can't help but stumble into success. You don't need to constantly remind us.
Overall, I made it through with my attention mostly intact, and am certainly going to try the 3rd book, I just missed the magic of the first one.

Fantastic performance as always

Three great voice actors provide a fantastic performance as can be expected from the black library.

An epic memoir, with excellent performances to match.

Written in the style of an annotated memoir, the performance of the narrator perfectly makes it seem as though Ciaphas Cain were reading the book himself. He doesn’t bother to give unique voices and accents to anyone speaking except those who are closest to the “author”, because as these memoirs are supposed to have been written decades after the events detailed, short lived and inconsequential characters don’t get the same effort and attention in the narrator’s performance because the “author” probably didn’t remember, or care, what they sounded like.

The performances by Stephen Perring as Commissar Cain have really stuck out to me for these reasons, and added tremendously to the experience of an already excellent story.

It’s fairly typical Sci-fi/Warhammer 40k stuff, but the personalities of the characters, the faux-memoir writing style and the addition of “annotations” (which is hilarious stuff, especially her disdain for some of the other “sources” she uses to fill in the gaps of Cain’s recollection) make it stand out from anything else I’ve read/listened to recently. It’s altogether an excellently fun, exciting and darkly hilarious series and I look forward to listening to more of them.

Stephen Perring’s performance may have spoiled the idea of continuing the series in paperback form, however. I’m definitely going to want to hear more from this group for the added enjoyment they bring.
