About this listen
Who is Zapata?
The shadowy head of an underground army fighting to liberate India from British rule, Zapata has brought their ruthless campaign of terror to the streets of Paris.
Having assassinated the young journalist and explorer Jacques de Villers at his own engagement party, Zapata's next target is the Paris head of the British Intelligence Service.
When an elite secret agent is being stalked, taunted, and pursued by an unseen foe, who can they turn to for help?
Who else, but....
Chantecoq. King of detectives, master of disguise.
Faced with the apparently impossible task of tracking down Europe's most wanted terrorist, in a house where nobody is quite what they seem, Chantecoq's guile and resourcefulness are pushed to the limit in a taut battle of wits against the deadly...Zapata!
First published in France in 1929 (as "Zapata...?"), and never before translated into English, this book is part of the "Further Exploits of Chantecoq" series, which sees the secret agent and expert spy catcher of Chantecoq and the Aubry Affair reborn as the greatest private detective of his age.
Please note that this novel contains flawed depictions of characters from India which would not be acceptable in a modern novel. The errors in their depiction are ignorant rather than malicious, and have been retained in translation for reasons of scholarly fidelity to the original novel.
