About this listen
CrossFit trainer Ben Bergeron has helped build the world's fittest athletes, but he's not like other coaches. He believes that greatness is not for the elite few; that winning is a result, not a goal; and that character, not talent, is what makes a true champion. His powerful philosophy can help anyone excel at all aspects of life.
Using the dramatic competition between the top contenders at the 2016 Reebok CrossFit Games® as a background, Ben explores the step-by-step process of achieving excellence and the unique set of positive character traits necessary for leveling up to world-class. The mindset and methodology that have produced some of the greatest athletes in the world's most grueling sport can work equally well for golfers, lawyers, artists, entrepreneurs - anyone who's willing to commit totally to becoming better than the best.
By Chasing Excellence, you'll discover how extraordinary it's possible for you to be.

Mat Fraser is undisputedly the fittest man in CrossFit history for winning the CrossFit Games an unprecedented five times. A student of engineering, Fraser optimized his body like a machine, and his absolute dedication to the training program he designed for himself is now legendary. Fraser became a master of identifying his weaknesses and then seeking out training methods to improve them, and he's idolized in the fitness community for his relentless pursuit of peak performance. It's not hard to see why he achieved so much success - but how is a different question.

Tia Toomey, the world’s fittest woman, has won the CrossFit Games an incredible six years in a row and is undeniably a true warrior. She has also trained for the Winter Olympics in bobsledding, competed in the Summer Olympics in weightlifting, and was a Commonwealth Games gold medalist. She is, in short, one of the most accomplished and dominant athletes in human history. But for Tia physical fitness is only a small part of overall strength. More important is building mental toughness.

Story
There is a new revolution happening in sports as more and more athletes are basing their success on this game-changing combination: health, nutrition, training, recovery, and mindset. Unfortunately, the evidence-based techniques that the expert PhDs, academic institutions, and professional performance staffs follow can be in stark contrast to what many athletes actually practice. When combined with the noise of social media, old-school traditions, and bro-science, it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction.

The Brave Athlete solves the 13 most common mental conundrums athletes face in their everyday training and in races. You don't have one brain - you have three; your ancient Chimp brain that keeps you alive, your modern Professor brain that navigates the civilized world, and your Computer brain that accesses your memories and runs your habits (good and bad). They fight for control all the time and that's when bad things happen. What if you could stop the thoughts and feelings you don't want? You can.

Sever take away!!
This book was exactly what you would expect from Ben. Inspiring and motivating and yet realistic and humble. The ideas and philosophies contained in these pages lay the ground work for achieving greatness in any arena in life, not just the Crossfit floor. This is a book I will revisit multiple times in life.

Uplifting and truthful
I’ve been feeling super stressed lately over failing an exam twice. I felt more than prepared for both attempts, but still came out of them with failing grades. These are verbal tests that I’ve known to have a disadvantage to. Ben’s book Chasing Excellence has tasked me to refocus and take charge of my study habits in order to pass the third attempt. Thank you!!

The secret is Action
I never thought I would be reviewing a book based in the world of crossfit. I can say I found it intriguing how these athletes' greatest hurdles are not the physical side but the mental side.
Conquering the mind that for most humans have not been taught to do so fall to what it has had in its upbringing from birth. For most, it is being cuddled and to have other do the work of a task when you cannot.
This book tells the actions required and the focused actions to overcome whatever you have in front of you, stopping you from your maximum achievement and excellence.
I truly believe applying the lessons will help you move to the top of your mountain.
Enjoy the read and also mostly enjoy the actions in the actions you do to the top.

If you’re not an athlete, skip this
There's nothing groundbreaking in this book, and in its genre, there are way better books out there. If you are an athlete or like sports performance literature, you might like this. Otherwise, I'd say move on. This read more like a marketing campaign because of how rooted it is in crossfit. The foreword alone was revealing: all that was said was "Ben was an amazing coach. Changed my mindset." Beyond that? Nothing really. So little about the actual topic (excellence) and so much about the athletes and games.
It took a whole hour of listening before one value was even mentioned: grit. The rest of the time? crossfit this and that. It was truly a test of mental strength to get through this book. Most of it was just fluff that seems inspiring, but don't expect nuts and bolts here. Hire Ben for that.
