Very good book.

Awesome performance of a great book
I don't usually like John Lee, but his performance for this book was very entertaining. The story was layed out fantastically and was easy to follow. all the characters were unique, the world building was interesting, and I can't wait to move on to the next books in the series

holy smokes!
Oh the twists! This is an incredibly well written story which expands wonderfully on the universe created in the last book. Not a direct sequel per say but the tie-ins, both overt and subtle, are so so SO rewarding. Alastair Reynolds will be getting all of my audible credits for the next few months, assuming I don't burn through them so quickly as to require their outright purchase. Well done, sir! Also John Lee is stellar as usual, one of my favorite narrators ever.

Incredibly creative noir/sci-fi
Loved the world building and didn’t mind the characters (when I figured them out at the end).
Parts were a bit confusing at times and some motives were a bit questionable but overall I really enjoyed it.
And John Lee…I can’t stop listening to his work!

Took a while to get into…
But when it got going I couldn’t put it down! I had a lot of fun throwing my wild theories about where things were leading at my partner who had read all the books.
It’s that perfect blend of cyberpunk noir, with just a touch of sci-fi horror. I still feel dazed by it and can’t wait to read the others in the series (I started with this one on my partners rec, following it with The Prefect now!)

Made you question certain premises
Narration could be more diverse. Plot is twisted sometimes without good reason, falling flat sometimes. Dialogs somewhat repetitive.

Excellent
I almost didn't get past chapter 9 because it didn't grab me, but I'm glad I held on because it went from barely interesting to can't put it down. A great winding ride.

The main character is completely insufferable, but the intruiging setting was just enough to hold me to the end
Unlike Revelation Space, Chasm City primarily stays in a singular P.O.V. with its main character and it suffers greatly for it. This is not helped by the change from a 3rd person P.O.V. to 1st person either, as the reader is only given this singular viewport to see the world through.
Where Dan Sylveste was a self-important jerk of a man, the other P.O.V characters (Ilia and Kouri) balance it out with differing personalities and perspectives on the events of the story. Tanner Mirabel is not afforded the same mercy, but he arguably needs it significantly more than Sylveste ever did.
Tanner is a highly capable man, and generally has an answer to every single situation he finds himself in. It never feels like he's out of his element despite being in a completely foreign place that is nothing like the world he expected to arrive in. Combined with his constant "witty" remarks and thoughts of how well he could kill any given person, it paints a picture of a man that I could not care less about.
The ensemble cast only exists to either state how interesting he's supposed to be, or to be beaten by him to show how cool he is.
All that being said, the setting is extremely interesting and I desperately wish I could have seen it from any other P.O.V. I think if you were interested in learning more about Chasm City, and don't mind a slog through the mind of Tanner Mirabel its worth checking this book out. I started it so I felt compelled to finish it, but given another chance I probably would have just skipped this one and read the wiki
