In the Irish town of Schancarrig, the young people carve their initials - and those of their loves - into the copper beech tree in front of the schoolhouse. But not even Father Gunn, the parish priest, who knows most of what goes on behind Shancarrig's closed doors, or Dr. Jims, the village doctor, who knows all the rest, realizes that not everything in the placid village is what it seems.

Publisher's Summary
Just round the corner from St Jarlath's Crescent (featured in Minding Frankie) is Chestnut Street. Here, the lives of the residents are revealed in Maeve Binchy's wonderfully compelling tales: Bucket Maguire, the window cleaner, who must do more than he bargained for to protect his son. Nessa Byrne, who's aunt comes to visit from America for six weeks every summer and turns the house - and Nessa's world - upside down.
Lilian, the generous girl with a big heart, and the fiancé not everyone approves of. And Melly, whose gossip about the neighbours leads to trouble in the form of a fortune teller, 'Madame Magic'...
No one rivals Maeve Binchy for stories of warmth, kindness, love, loss - and life not always turning out as expected.

Love the peek into people’s lives
I’ve always enjoyed Maeve Binchy’s books because they’re set with such real people with real problems but there’s a grace about them. Thanks Maeve!

Poorly Narrated
Typical Maeve Binchy short stories. Not bad, not great. The narrator has a quavery voice and needs to clear her throat. Her voice was so irritating and distracting it was hard to listen to.
