Human beings are primates, and primates are political animals. Our brains, therefore, are designed not just to hunt and gather but also to help us get ahead socially, often via deception and self-deception. But while we may be self-interested schemers, we benefit by pretending otherwise. The less we know about our own ugly motives, the better - and thus, we don't like to talk, or even think, about the extent of our selfishness. This is "the elephant in the brain".

This book is a practical guide to recovering from lingering childhood trauma. It is copiously illustrated with examples of the author's and his clients' journeys of recovering.

Story
We've all experienced moments when we lose control of a situation and ourselves. Now, in Growing Yourself Back Up, the first book to explain the idea of emotional regression to the general listener, best-selling author John Lee identifies the circumstances that cause these seemingly uncontrollable feelings and shows how they are directly tied to our experience as children.
Written by: John Lee
Publisher's Summary
The emotional trauma we suffer as children not only shapes our emotional lives as adults but also affects our physical health and overall well-being. Scientists now know on a biochemical level exactly how parents' chronic fights, divorce, death in the family, being bullied or hazed, and growing up with a hypercritical, alcoholic, or mentally ill parent can leave permanent, physical "fingerprints" on our brains.
When we as children encounter sudden or chronic adversity, excessive stress hormones cause powerful changes in the body, altering our body chemistry. The developing immune system and brain react to this chemical barrage by permanently resetting our stress response to "high", which in turn can have a devastating impact on our mental and physical health.
Donna Jackson Nakazawa shares stories from people who have recognized and overcome their adverse experiences, shows why some children are more immune to stress than others, and explains why women are at particular risk. Groundbreaking in its research and inspiring in its clarity, Childhood Disrupted explains how you can reset your biology - and help your loved ones find ways to heal.

Opened up so many doors
I have suffered from pain for most of my life in some form or another. And I knew I experienced trauma in my childhood. This book does an amazing job of explaining how those events manifest in the body, but gives hope that there are ways to heal.
This book finally opened me up to talk about those past events (scored an 8 out of 10 or 11 on the ACEs survey) and it finally spurred me on to seek help from a therapist. I just booked my first session today after completing the book. You can do things to help you, but there are things that you just don't know about and it can be scary to go through it alone....even with the support of your family, it just isn't enough and it may be too much to dump onto them as you try to heal.
I have recommended it to almost everyone I know who has experienced illness or potential childhood trauma. For my own family, I hope they can listen and maybe understand a little bit more about me.
Highly recommend.
I am a male in his late 40s, if that helps anyone reading the reviews that may be sceptical due to similar age and stage.
