Publisher's Summary

For more than 10,000 years, humans have been fascinated by a seemingly innocuous plant with bright-colored fruits that bite back when bitten. Ancient New World cultures from Mexico to South America combined these pungent pods with every conceivable meat and vegetable, as evident from archaeological finds, Indian artifacts, botanical observations, and studies of the cooking methods of the modern descendants of the Incas, Mayans, and Aztecs. In Chile Peppers: A Global History, Dave DeWitt, a world expert on chiles, travels from New Mexico across the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia chronicling the history, mystery, and mythology of chiles around the world and their abundant uses in 70 mouth-tingling recipes.

Some Things You Should Know

I also bought the hard cover and am glad I did as the book is beautiful and the pictures necessary. However, I wanted to listen to this while driving. Sadly, it doesn't work real well this way. The content could have benefited from a good (better?) editor. It is scattered and you really don't know if this is a travelogue or a book about chiles. The travel portions are, well...hokey. The author keeps dropping names of his family and friends and people he just meets (Mary Jane opted for the catfish; Anne Marie chose the lamb; XXXX was wearing a beautiful dress...). Frankly, who cares? This is supposed to be about chills.

If the chile content were stripped out the book would be fine. But it's infuriating to hear that Mary Jane did this or that all the time and I found myself cursing at the speaker as I struggled to get through this. I should have known better as the author calls himself "The Pope of Peppers." Always beware when a person beyond the age of 12 has a nickname—and likes to refer to himself by it.

Lastly the format of the book for Audible needs some work. As it is scattered with recipes throughout I wish Audible would put all the recipes at the end. Because they don't you are constantly fast forwarding through them to try to maintain the story line.

The book feels sloppy and lazy. The narration is annoying and is the oral equivalent of airplane food. The format is difficult and not suited for a audio book without some changes. The chile content within these criticisms is good, but too much effort is required to enjoy it.
