About this listen

"Louise Brealey is an excellent reader who gives Cilka a thoughtful, sympathetic voice." (Jersey's Best)

This program includes a bonus conversation with the author.

From the author of the multi-million copy bestseller The Tattooist of Auschwitz comes a new novel based on an incredible true story of love and resilience.

Her beauty saved her - and condemned her.

Cilka is just 16-years-old when she is taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp in 1942, where the commandant immediately notices how beautiful she is. Forcibly separated from the other women prisoners, Cilka learns quickly that power, even unwillingly taken, equals survival. When the war is over and the camp is liberated, freedom is not granted to Cilka: She is charged as a collaborator for sleeping with the enemy and sent to a Siberian prison camp. But did she really have a choice? And where do the lines of morality lie for Cilka, who was send to Auschwitz when she was still a child?

In Siberia, Cilka faces challenges both new and horribly familiar, including the unwanted attention of the guards. But when she meets a kind female doctor, Cilka is taken under her wing and begins to tend to the ill in the camp, struggling to care for them under brutal conditions.

Confronting death and terror daily, Cilka discovers a strength she never knew she had. And when she begins to tentatively form bonds and relationships in this harsh, new reality, Cilka finds that despite everything that has happened to her, there is room in her heart for love.

From child to woman, from woman to healer, Cilka's journey illuminates the resilience of the human spirit - and the will we have to survive.

How could one person possibly endure all that Cilka did?

From her happy childhood, to the horrors of the death camps, only to be punished further, while others got their freedom. Thank you for this story of survival. I really enjoyed the author speaking at the end, sharing why she came to write this book, and how she gathered her information.....

The most engaging story I’ve ever experienced

All I can say is that I’ll remember this story for the rest of my life. I truly loved it, and I’ve recommended it ever since I finished listening to it. I’ve purchased the paper copy so that I’ll always have a physical reminder of Cilka’s journey and how it made me feel.

Fantastic book

This was a really interesting and captivating historical fiction. I enjoyed learning about Soviet Gulags in such an stark, yet heartwarming way. This book won’t disappoint.

Good book, great narrator-just not for this book

I liked the book even though I found some of it a bit unrealistic. Louise Brealey is a great narrator but her polished style just does not suit the story and the characters. She sounds like a lady telling a story during afternoon tea and not people in one of the harshest Siberian camps. I listened to her narration before and really enjoyed it but for this book she wasn’t an ideal choice in my opinion.

Yet Another Outstanding Book

this book is beautifully written as well as beautifully narrated. It makes me deeply sad that I will never know the beautiful human that I was introduced to in the story.

didn't want to turn it off

Great characters. Hard to imagine feeling happy at times given the circumstances, but definitely loved the circle of strength that the women created.
